Statistics • Breast cancer is second most diagnosed cancer in women. • 1 in every 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their life. • Women with BRCA mutation are 5 times more likely to develop breast cancer. • A woman’s risk of breast cancer doubles with a first-degree relative being diagnosed.
BRCA1 and BRCA2 • Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 and 2 • Tumor suppressor genes • Mutation is linked to developing hereditary breast cancer. • Again: 5 times more likely to develop breast cancer.
Genetic Testing • Blood test available • Checks for changes in DNA of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. • Can take up to 6 weeks for result. • Positive result does not mean you have breast cancer.
Who? • Individuals should get tested if: • Family history of breast cancer • Ashkenazi Jewish decent • Age (older women)
How to Decide • It is recommended to consult a genetic counselor. • Assess risk • Refer to other physicians, psychiatrists • Present results/options
After the Results • Preventive measures should be taken even with negative result: • Surveillance • Mammograms • Clinical breast exams • Self-breast exams • Surgery • Radical • Mastectomy, Reconstruction
Dealing with Results • A positive result can have an emotional toll. • Stay positive • Take preventative measures • Seek out support
