Overall objective • Develop a methodology for gathering information on European biomasspotential for energy using terrestrial and earth observations. • The methodology will: • Be based on procedures that provide compatible and comparable results across Europe (i.e. they are harmonized) • Integrate existing European services, tools and databases (whenever this is possible) • Be formulated as a result of end-user requirement assessment Classification of European Biomass Potential for Bioenergy Using Terrestrial and Earth Observations
Rationale and initial angle • Different methods are used on different scales for different purposes, etc all over Europe. • Results cannot be compared and cannot be aggregated to European level. • Initial angle: • The same methodology should be used when assessing biomass for energy on a national level • This methodology should not replace but rather supplement existing methods • Biomass for energy potential can then be measured, compared, monitored all over Europe
Defining the Framework for the Methodology • Based on a systematic assessment work: • What kind of methodologies are currently used by the end-users? (D3.1 and D3.2, Month 8 and 12) • What kind of approaches/methods are available from the literature? (D2.1 and D2.2 by Month 8 and 14) • What are the user requirements? (D4.1 by Month 19) • Challenge: finding the best possible compromise (sophisticaton, accuracy) • Overall Framework defined on combined methods (D4.2 by Month 24)
Why Remote Sensing? • Spatially explicit approach • For some WBC/Eastern European countries even basic inventories are mising • For other EU countries higher spatial and/or thematic resolution may be required by the end-users than what is available.
CEUBIOM Constraints • Much focus on the Western Balkan Countries and Eastern Europe • Users: national level authorities • Strictly bottom-up approach (provides information for the EU as a whole only after aggregation)
