Comedy of Manners • Deals with the vices and follies of the upper class. • Uses satire and flattery • Character are restrained and use verbal comedy (lot’s of witty interplay) • Characters use bows and curtsies and hand and facial gestures
Realism vs. Romanticism • Romanticism: • Drama emphasized heroism and sentiment, extraordinary characters and melodramatic plots. • Actors used large, overly dramatic, and symbolic gestures
