Why people suffer? Life's oldest question. • “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” Job 13:15 • “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” JOB 1:21 We claim this for believers but what about nonbelievers?
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson records the following event:
A popular argument used by some atheists: • If God were all-good, he would destroy evil. • If God were all-powerful, he could destroy evil. • But evil has not been destroyed. • Therefore, God does not exist.
A classic question in theology; “How can a loving, yet omnipotent God permit evil and suffering in the world?” The argument goes as follows:
A God that allows suffering to continue is either • a) not all-powerful (not omnipotent). • b) not loving because he has the power to prevent suffering but is unwilling to do so. • c) not all-knowing (not omniscient).
When Bad Things Happen To Good People. “Rabbi” Kushner • If God were all-powerful, he could destroy evil. • If God were all-good, he would destroy evil. • But evil has not been destroyed. • Therefore, God does not exist or He is limited. • But there is evidence that God exists. • Therefore, God must not be all-powerful.
The disciples ask a theological question. John 9:1-2 There were only 1 reason with 2 options in their mind. Jews often attributed sickness or suffering to sin. For them there were 3 options: Parental sin Personal sin Generational sin
This is the only time in the New Testament that Jesus gives a divine reason for suffering. “That the work of God might be revealed in him.” John 9:3
The Jews attempt to trap Jesus Through the testimony of the healed blind man 9:10; 17; 24 Through the testimony of his parents 9:18-23
The recognition of Jesus Not only can the man see but the way he sees Jesus changes. • John 9:11 “a man” • John 9:17 “a prophet” • John 9:38 “the Lord”
Personal application: • Sin does create suffering but not all suffering has sin as its source. • Is my religion more concerned about tradition than about people? • Are my rules and traditions preventing God from blessing? • If my god is small enough to explain then he is not big enough to be God.
