Newspaper Worldwide Continued 1844: Telegraph is created 1830: 715 newspapers were published in the US 1870: 5,091 newspapers wee published in the US 1873: first illustrated newspaper in New York 1880: First photographs appear in newspapers 1903: the first tabloid style newspaper, The Daily Mirror is published. Including the first “exclusive” interview.

  4. Continued 1954: There are more radios than there are daily newspapers. 1967: Newspapers use digital production using computers 1994: first independent on-line daily newspapers appear on the world wide web.

  5. Local Newspapers- Early 18th Century • The local newspapers dates from the early 18th Century-The Norwich Post first published in 1701. Content: The oldest newspaper consisted of a single sheet, usually published on a saturday, with 2 columns per pages. They contained a mixture of local and national news. It included advertisements for theatrical productions, and advertisements for new businesses and entertainment for farms and businesses to let. Circulation: The first tax started in 1712 at just 1/2 d a copy, however in 1797 it increased to 31/2 d and this effected on who brought the newspapers leading only the higher classes to be able to buy the newspapers and furthermore the information and news was directed to the higher classes about government and other political issues the lower classes weren’t included in.

  6. 19th Century 20th Century • In the Mid 19th century to the abolition of advertisement and newspaper taxes and paper duties meat a rapid growth of newspapers. Today The Mail survives however the The Chronicle was taken over by The Mail/Observer group in 1957. In the 20th century the contents and layout of local newspapers had changed. originally front pages were given to advertisements and much of the news reported. today local newspapers print local news and occasionally other national news that are headlines. The change was due to the growth of radio and television overage of the news. Before it was illustrations that were mostly used and line drawings but photographs appeared more in the early1920s.

Distribution • Local newspaper can now be distributed through: • Smart phones • Apps • Laptops/computers • All these different ways are ways people now can access local newspapers, in a convenient and easier way. Now people can subscribe on the internet which now allows them to see the newspaper whenever they wont, this is a faster and better way for people as it benefit them
