Learning Objective – To investigate the similarities and differences of boy’s and girl’s lives in the city states of Athens and Sparta Success Criteria - ‘I can use a range of sources to compare the roles of boys and girls in Athens and Sparta’.
Activities • Group 1 – Use the BBC Schools website: (http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/ancient_greeks/sparta) to investigate Sparta. With an adult, read the website and take notes on interesting facts that would directly affect boy’s and girl’s lives. Design posters persuading boys/girls from living there or not. • Group 2 – You will be split into Athenians and Spartans. Research your city state and create posters explaining why your state is better for boys (if boy) or girls (if girl), and what it is like to live there. • Group 3 – Research both states, choose one to live in, and create poster explaining why as opposed to the other. Ask yourself if you felt you had to compromise when choosing a state (e.g. do girls in Sparta have more rights but have to live in a strict regime?)
