  2. IN PRINT Newspapers are the oldest and, generally, the most trusted source of news. Newspapers employ the most reporters of any of the media and provide the most in-depth coverage. NEWSPAPERS

  3. IN PRINT Most cities over 25,000 in population have a daily newspaper. Most dailies are “morning papers,” whose primary coverage area is their home town. DAILY NEWSPAPERS

  7. IN PRINT There are countless specialty, or specialized, magazines that provide news to a specific group of people: such as computer users, skateboarders, gardeners, etc., etc. SPECIALTY MAGAZINES

  8. IN PRINT More and more journalists and writers are writing non-fiction books about current events to provide an incredibly in-depth look at the cause and effect of a wide range of topics. These take months of research and 100s of interviews. NON-FICTION BOOKS

  9. BROADCAST ABC, NBC and CBS are the three top networks. Fox has joined their ranks. The Big Three networks focus primarily on entertainment, but each has a news division that produces the nightly news and a variety of news magazines and special coverage of events. The broadcast news tries to be fair and impartial. Each of the major network have 100s of local affiliates around the country that provide local news broadcasts, usually at 5 and 10 p.m. THE BIG NETWORKS

  10. BROADCAST In the last 15 years cable news has become a driving force in news coverage because they are on the air 24/7. The big cable news networks are FOX, MSNBC, and CNN. Cable news is dominated talk shows and interview formats that are often biased to one side or another and oftentimes do not present the news accurately. CABLE NEWS

  11. BROADCAST The “Fake News” popularized by Saturday Night Live has found a home on Comedy Central with the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert. Researchers found that a lot of young people actually get their news from these shows. FAKE NEWS

  12. BROADCAST The venerated British Broadcasting Corporation, which is usually known more simply as the BBC, began on the radio years ago and has since moved to television and the Internet. Based in England, it is the world’s largest broadcasting corporation with 23,000 employees, an annual budget of more than $8 billion and hundreds of reporters around the world. THE BBC

  16. BROADCAST Univision is the largest Spanish language television network in the country. Telemundo is the second largest. Both reach Hispanics in the U.S., Puerto Rico and in Mexico SPANISH LANGUAGE TELEVISION

  17. BROADCAST Al Jazeera means "The Island." It is an independentbroadcaster owned by the state of Qatar. It was launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel. It has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and several TV channels in many languages accessible around the world. AL JAZEERA

  18. INTERNET All newspapers have web sites that provide not only what is in their printed versions, but much more in terms of more news, more photos, interactive features, video and additional advertising revenue. NEWSPAPERS

  19. INTERNET The same is true for television networks and local television news shows. In addition to video, they also post written news articles, archive material, interactive graphics, and actually much, much more than what you find on their Television newscasts. BROADCAST

  20. INTERNET Salon.com and Slate.com are two of the pioneering web-based publications. That is to say they do not have a print version, they are 100% on line. Some newspapers have stopped printing and moved to the web, such as The Christian Science Monitor and the New Orleans Times Picayune. ONLY ON THE WEB

  21. INTERNET Current TV is a new, progressive media outlet found only on the web. It was started by former Vice President Al Gore. On January of 2013, Al Jazeera purchased Current TV, retained its off-air staff and launched a new channel called Al Jazeera America. ONLY ON THE WEB

  22. INTERNET Yahoo, Google, MSN and virtually all other web portals provide extensive news coverage. Few, if any, actually have reporters on staff to gather news, but they provide articles and photos from news services. WEB PORTALS

  23. INTERNET YouTube, home to millions of videos on everything from music videos to people doing stupid stuff just to get attention, is actually an incredibly important venue for news. Video clips — both from national news sources and average people — provide real information worldwide. YOUTUBE

  24. INTERNET Twitter is a recent addition to the news world where newsmakers, politicians and celebrities Tweet their thoughts that are then fodder for news articles. Everyday citizens use Twitter to report on what they see around them. Facebook is also used by newsmakers to post information, and people around the world use Facebook to post information. SOCIAL MEDIA

  25. INTERNET Web logs, or Blogs, are relatively new to the scene. Established journalists and average people set up blogs to opine about whatever their hearts desire. Some blogs, such as www.dailykos.com become influential and can actually drive the news cycle. BLOGOSPHERE

  26. INTERNET Most news sources provide Podcasts, where short clips can be downloaded to your smartphone to view and share. This is just one new example of how the availability of news over the Internet is growing and taking advantage of new technologies. Most major news sources also provide free e-mail alerts to your computer or cell phone to keep you up-to-date on news you want to follow. PODCASTS & EMAIL ALERTS
