  1. Moving towards physics in 2008-2009 • Tier-3 news • Restructuring of physics and combined performance in ATLAS • Physics and combined performance activities • Next meetings and content D. Froidevaux

  2. Tier-3 news • New fellow (M. Schott) and T. Koffas will work with R. Hawkings (and also with Markus E. and myself) to prepare Tier-3 for analysis. • Recent discussions in overall software about computing model are relevant for CERN staff because: • All AOD’s (2.5 versions) should be available at CERN. But how do we find out how true this is? Today, the tools do not exist for this • Severe disk space shortage at CERN for Tier-0/CAF: the above statement is put into question sometimes in the discussions • Analysis framework still unclear (many developments still ongoing)See for instance PAT meeting this week (07/05) and talk on EWPA (Every-Where Physics Analysis which was originally ElectroWeak) D. Froidevaux

  3. Rough current picture of physics activities • Standard Model physics. Convenor: Alex CerriFour areas of activity: • Min. bias physics: B. Demirkoz, A. Messina, I. Gavrilenko, D. Berge, R. Kwee, H. PerneggerJ. Tojo, M. Donega • Direct photon production (single and pairs)M. Delmastro, G. Lehmann, G. Unal, M. KataokaJ. Tojo, LAPP Annecy • Dileptons (low to high mass spectrum)T. Hryn’ova, E. Lytken, T. Kono, M. Aleksa, T. Carli, S. Palestini, B. GoriniM. Smizanska • Early tau physicsY. Coadou, B. Di Girolamo, T. Koffas, T. PetersenE. Richter-Was • W/Z inclusive and W/Z+jetsM. Schott, M. Goulette, T. Cornelissen, N. Ellis, D. FroidevauxE. Dobson, LAPP Annecy D. Froidevaux

  4. Rough current picture of physics activities • Supersymmetry. Convenor: Andreas HoeckerExtend work done over 2006-2007 on searches with lepton+jets+ETmiss to background studies with early dataP.-F. Giraud, S. Schaetzel, B. PetersenJ. Boyd,Geneva Univ. • Top-quark physics. Convenor: Richard HawkingsStudy final states containing tt+X, work on b-taggingM. Wilson, J. Stelzer, D. Berge, C. Schmitt, A. WildauerG. Gorfine • Higgs physics. Convenor: Guillaume UnalH to gg searchesA. HoeckerN. Berger (LAPP Annecy) D. Froidevaux

  5. Combined performance activities • Some really new effort developing here: • Using J/y to mm and ee decays to improve understanding of magnetic field, alignment and calibration of ATLAS detectorT. Hryn’ovaH. Sandaker, L. Chevalier • Work on high-level tools for tracking and EM calorimeter matching (alignment, E/p, material), using photon conversions, inclusive electrons, and basically all signal sources of interest before this can be refined with large samples of W/Z decaysM. Goulette, C. Schmitt, T. KoffasM. Donega (Univ. of Philadelphia) • Work on ETmiss issues with early data (from detector oddities, to detector cracks, to intrinsic detector performance) D. Berge D. Froidevaux

  6. Physics activities • Next CAT meetings: always on Fridays between 13h30 and 15h30 • 27/06 • 29/08 • 26/09 • 17/10 • 14/11 • 12/12 • We really need to ramp up our physics preparation activities over the coming 3-4 months (first collisions at 10 TeV may occur towards end of September!) • Next meeting will cover perhaps one or two of the recent or upcoming workshops (b-tagging, tau) but I will also ask some of the smaller working groups to report on their work, hopefully with some success! D. Froidevaux
