Paraphrasing The DQ Alternative
How can you add an outside source (evidence)? • Direct quote • Research confirms "There will always be a middle child striving to be noticed by the parents” (Raisman 3). • Paraphrase • Middle children are constantly seeking their parents attention (Raisman 3). • Notice the change of vocabulary and sentence structure! • Notice it still gets a citation!
How can you add evidence successfully? • Keep author’s name with material at all times • Keep direct quotes around things not your words at all times • Shorten quotes with […] to only quote exactly what is necessary (short phrase instead of whole sentence) • Don’t use too many quotes-it weakens your argument (25-75 words) • Cross-check your notes with sources to ensure anything not your words/ideas has a citation
Basic Citation: • DQ: The baby of the family, the youngest, “will be favored in various ways because it will always be the youngest and thus thought to be the most vulnerable” (Raisman 2). • P: Family members habitually favor the youngest, the most defenseless, because no matter what they will always be younger than the other siblings (Raisman 2). • Notice the punctuation, the citation, and change in sentence structure and vocabulary.
Steps for Paraphrasing Successfully… • Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. • Set the original aside and write your paraphrase from memory. • Jot down a few words to remind you later how you envision using this material.
Check to make sure your version accurately expresses all the important information and in the correct context. • Check to ensure you have not borrowed the original sentence or paragraph structure and only changed the wording, as this is plagiarism, too. • Record the source per parenthetical citation guidelines.
Basic Citation: Paraphrase • DQ:In a large family “the oldest child obtains immediate advantages from the age old idea of birthright” (Raisman 2). • P: Thinking back to the outdated idea of birth order inheritance, oldest siblings tend to receive special accolades and praise (Raisman 2). • Notice the punctuation and the citation.
More Basic Citations • DQ: “What is less often realized is the need for librarians and teachers to accept and promote nontraditional forms of reading” (Braun 38). • P: Teachers and librarians need to encourage all types of reading for teenagers (Braun 38).
