Center for Learning & Leadership Learn & Lead Tools for Person Centered Thinking The tools presented in this training are part of the Essential Lifestyle Planning (ELP) developed by Michael Smull (1992). The training activities of the Oklahoma ELP Learning Community are funded by the Oklahoma Developmental Disabilities Council. Trainings are offered through the Center for Learning and Leadership in partnership with the Oklahoma Disability Law Center and Bios, Incorporated.

Center for Learning & Leadership Learn & Lead Principles establishing the Foundation of this training: These principles were developed by Oklahoma Individual & Family Support by families, service providers, advocates, and other members of the Oklahoma Family Support Partnership (OFSP) Council. • Honor their expertise. • Respect and accept their values and preferences, • cultural beliefs, and life-ways.

Center for Learning & Leadership Learn & Lead Goals for today’s training: • Introduce you to tools that you can use to • capture what is important TO and FOR the • person and how to balance health and safety • with their preferences. • Introduce you to a tool that will help you gather • a team’s thoughts in a way that helps to lead to • a plan of action.

  9. Center for Learning & Leadership Learn & Lead “Robbie” A young man “Robbie” just enrolled in your school and has been assigned to your classroom. He is enrolled in the 5th grade but is smaller than the rest of his peers. Robbie is smiling and carrying his backpack. He stays close to his mother and grandmother, who are important to him. Through talking briefly with Robbie and his mother, you find out he is great at building things, loves trains, and has a very inquisitive nature. He has difficulty with reading, but enjoys it and wants to read – he even has his own library card! He especially likes science. He likes being outdoors. Robbie and his mother have brought you a copy of his IEP. Special services he should receive according to this IEP are specialized instruction in reading and mathematics and related services in speech and language and occupational therapy. During the first week with Robbie, you find he is usually playing alone. Digging further, you find his social skills are not good. It doesn’t seem that he knows how to play with others. Some peers have also started teasing him and he stays near you now. He offers to help in class and smiles a lot when praised.
