Also, the Atlantic islands of the Azores (2,247 sq km, nine islands) and Madeira (794 sq km, two islands). Population: 10,839,357 Capital: Lisboa Official language: Portuguese. Languages:9

Portugal still stands in the shadow of a 1974 coup that overthrew a corrupt government and established significant political and economic reforms.  After several years of struggling to redevelop itself, economic growth improved in 1986 after joining the European Union and becoming a founding member of NATO.

  4. Drug use has become prevalent, with half of all teenagers reportedly experimenting with illegal substances. The country is known as the bridge for shipping cocaine and hashish from Southeast Asia to Europe and North America.  The Portuguese government is still struggling to pull its nation out of increasing debt and social depression.

  5. Portugal is a financially and spiritually bankrupt nation.  As late as the 16th century, the nation's power and wealth were almost unparalleled.  Now, an overwhelming feeling that the best days are behind them has left the people with a heavy hopelessness. Though over 94% claim Christianity as their faith, few openly practice or evangelize.

  6. It is a stagnant belief based upon tradition and habit, not a living and growing relationship with the Lord.  The Portuguese youth in particular are overlooked, and New Age ideals, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses are beginning to take hold of those who do not know Christ.  

  7. The Economy Portugal has turned a corner. Having gone through a mild boom, a slump, and a severe recession, all packed into less than two decades, the Portuguese economy has re-emerged with a newfound strength.  Portugal, has developed a service-based economy, while agriculture and fishing— once major sectors—have become much less important. These institutions are therefore highly strategic: Assemblies of God, Portuguese Bible Institute (GEM, ECM), Presbyterian, Baptist and Brazilian-founded Bethel Bible Institutes. 

  10. Evangelicals - challenges The need for a united vision. The Portuguese Evangelical Alliance (EA) continues to grow in impact, a necessary development. Pray for wisdom, vision and courage for its leaders and members, since the EA plays a key role.

  11. Lisbon Festival of Hope – April 2018 • Organised by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association • “We had high expectations for this event,” one volunteer said. And God exceeded. Many counselors and church leaders had tears in their eyes as people streamed forward to start their new life with Christ. • More than 50 percent of those who walked forward during the invitation to accept Christ were under the age of 25.

Prayer points • Pray for traditional religion to be replaced with genuine faith for those in the Roman Catholic Church. • Pray for believers to catch a missions vision and seize evangelistic opportunities in the greater Portuguese-speaking world. • Pray for the Portuguese Evangelical Alliance’s initiative to plant a church in every one of Portugal’s 316 counties. • Young people are often spiritually neglected. • Christian media ministries – Bible Society, CLC, radio, Internet
