Tripartite research collaboration: transforming attitudes and practice to research Wendy McKinstry Undergraduate clinical leader (Physiotherapy), Counties Manukau Health, Auckland, New Zealand “I felt like I was helping both CMH and patients in this area by highlighting research that would benefit them both” Student X “They were the clinical content expert and I was able to provide the research methodology expertise” AUT lecturer • Introduction • Prior to 2012 research projects in the Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy) degree at AUT University were assigned and supervised by AUT lecturers • There is a need for applied research that has relevance to the local population • Clinical staff have low confidence with research methodology White (2012) Aims To establish a research collaboration between CMH staff and AUT University staff to: • Address clinical questions raised by CMH physiotherapists • Develop and promote collaborative research • Develop CMH staff confidence in research “I learnt so much from supervising alongside AUT staff, it built up my confidence and understanding of the research process” CMH physiotherapist Progress to date • Increased confidence in research skills amongst CMH physiotherapists • Improved research links between organisations • Tripartite research relationship • Students provided positive feedback, emphasising how the relevance of the research made it a rewarding experience Framework Examples of clinical questions • Methods • A framework for collaborative research was developed with AUT University • Barriers to collaborative research were identified and addressed i.e. preparation and support was provided to staff /students • 15 clinical questions were identified translating into 13 research collaboratives involving; • 25 year 4 students • 9 AUT lecturers • 14 CMH physiotherapists • Conclusion • Several projects have potential for further development and/or publication • Changes have been made to further improve the research collaborative process, particularly around collaborative marking • The research collaborative concept has expanded to include other health boards What are the advantages of walking aids after stroke What is it like to live with bronchiectasis?
