Seasonal Affective Disorder • This is a type of depression. • It’s root cause may be insensitivity to light. • Most people with SAD are mostly affected during the winter.
The lack of natural light causes light insensitivity which disrupts the brains process. • This effects the chemicals serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood.
Light Therapy • People with SAD can go thru treatments to help ease depression called light therapy. • Light therapy involves you sitting in front of a special type of light for thirty morning. • Light therapy uses a special light of 10,000 lux, which has to enter thru your eyes.
Light Therapy (Continued) • Skin exposure hasn’t been proven effective. • Some people feel better after one treatment.
Effects of Light Therapy • Evidence has proven that light therapy can trigger manic episodes in the vulnerable. • Some drugs or herbs you take may cause you to be sensitive to light. • Rashes can result from the light treatment. • Anxiety, jitteriness, headaches, early awakening, or eyestrain can occur.
Facts • The symptoms of SAD leave with the return of longer sunlight. • People’s body rhythms are thrown off with the lack of sunlight.
