  2. MID-DECADE - INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF MICS1 • High level of satisfaction with quick information at low cost • Exceeded expectations for monitoring in data-poor countries • Data processing and report writing require strengthening • Additional support needed for capacity building

  3. END-DECADE - INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF MICS2? • Unfortunately no!! • But many lessons were learned and we can review them here and now.

  4. MICS2IN PREPARATION FOR DATA COLLECTION • Steering committee for the survey • Number of domains covered in the survey • Questionnaire design and adaptation • Translation of questionnaire • Pretest of survey instruments • Anthropometric equipment • Training duration • The role of supervisors and editors

  5. MICS2 DURING DATA COLLECTION • Editing in the field • Timing of data entry • Feedback from the central office

  6. MICS2AFTER DATA COLLECTION • Data entry and verification • Editing and imputation • ‘Cleaned’ data file • Sample weights and data recodes

  7. MICS2DATA ENTRY AND EDITING PROGRAMS What we used…. • MICS2 programs (EPI/INFO, IMPS and ISSA). These were based on the model questionnaire and needed adaptation at country level • Other software programs (e.g. Access, Oracle) • Excellent technical support

  8. MICS2CALCULATION OF INDICATORS • Linking with sample weights • Data recodes • Generation of tables • Derivation of indicators that need more than tabulations (e.g. U5MR) • Further analysis

  9. MICS2CALCULATION OF INDICATORS • MICS2 tabulation program, using SPSS. This was based on the edited file structure which was output from the data entry and editing program for the model questionnaire • Programs for complex indicators (e.g. U5MR) • Other software programs • Good technical support

MICS2PUBLIC USE MICRODATA FILE Gains • Increased the cost effectiveness of data collection • Increased country ownership of the data and acceptance of results • Facilitated examination of trends • Assisted in making comparisons within countries and across countries • Enabled in-depth analysis of specific topics

  11. MICS2DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORTING • MICS2 standard tabulation plan • Other tabulations and analyses, using SPSS • Use of other programs/methods • Preliminary and final reports • Presentation of results • Public use microdata file
