  3. Abstinence Until Marriage • Teen may choose 2 abstain from sex. • Only 100% way 2 eliminate Unplanned Pregnancy & Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Committing to Abstinence During T teen yrs. they experience • Physical, mental/emotional, & social growth • Begin setting goals 4 their future • Succeed in school • Setting a goal 2 abstain from sex helps achieve goals set. • Abstinence requires planning & SELF-CONTROL • Tip 2 commit 2 abstinence • Establish UR priorities –

  5. Committing to Abstinence • Set personal limits on how U express affection • Share UR thoughts w/your partner • Talk w/a trusted adult. • Avoid high-pressure situations. • Do not use alcohol or other drugs • Can’t think rationally when U R under T influence of alcohol or drugs.

  6. Reasons to Practice Abstinence • Disrupt UR life • Interfere w/UR goals 4 T future • Complicate UR relationships w/others.

  7. Legal Implications Each state defines a legal age 2 engage in sexual activity. • Illegal 4 an adult 2 have sex w/a minor • Can B arrested & convicted 4 having sex w/a minor • Jail is possible • May B ID as a sex offender • Label can harm UR career or future relationships

  8. Effects on Physical Health • Sex can affect physical health of males & females

  9. Unplanned Pregnancy • Consequence of sexual activity • Teen body is not sufficiently mature 2 sustain a health pregnancy • Can lead 2 complications R baby & mother

  10. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) • Teen age 15 – 19 R at greatest risk of contacting STDs • Yearly - 3 million teens contact STDs • Diagnosed early STDs can B treated & cured • Some have no cures • Chlamydia can cause sterility when left untreated (childless) • AIDS (fatal)

  11. Effects on Emotional Health • Abstinence = Self-Respect • Sexual activity goes against values/religion • Cause teen 2 lie 2 parents • Teen is dishonest & may cause feeling of guilt & regret • Parenthood cause great emotional strain

Effects on Social Health • Teen who choose sexual abstinence safeguard their reputations – Those who don’t: • R labeled as “EASY” (who Male or Female?) • harm relationship w/family members • Cause parents not to trust them • Unplanned pregnancy may cause teen 2 drop out of school & sacrificed College • By law father is required 2 support child until its 18th B-day • Give up social lives 2 meet parent responsibilities. (who Male or Female?) • Committing 2 Abstinence is T safe & health choice 4 teens.

Using Avoidance Techniques & Refusal Skills • Learn avoidance techniques, actions & phrases • Dates want 2 go 2 an unsupervised party suggest restaurant, movies, etc. • Share UR commitment w/UR partner & stand by UR position/Be assertive • Use refusal statements along w/body language • Don’t B afraid 2 hurt their feelings.

  14. Pressure Line If U love me, U will Everyone’s doing it Don’t B such a baby My feelings won’t change. I’ll still respect U Refusal Statement If U care about me, U won’t pressure me. No, everyone’s not. I’m sticking 2 my values. It’s T mature, responsible decision 2 wait. Maybe, but I won’t respect myself. Saying NO to Sexual Activity
