  2. Congressman Curt Weldon, “National Security Role of the Aircraft Industry in the War against Terrorism” AHS Dinner Meeting, October 17, 2006 About our speaker .... Congressman Curt Weldon serves the residents of the Seventh Congressional District of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Weldon has lived in the Seventh District his entire life. Born to a blue-collar family in the refinery town of Marcus Hook, located in Delaware County, Weldon has been serving his community for much of his adult life.  After earning his BA from West Chester University in 1969, Congressman Weldon served as a teacher in Delaware County and as a volunteer firefighter in Marcus Hook, eventually rising to the rank of Chief.  This experience as a firefighter has given him a unique appreciation for the needs of firefighters and first responders, and one of his first actions as a member of Congress was to create the Congressional Fire Caucus, to serve as a means for discourse regarding fire-fighting issues.  Weldon's political career began when he was elected mayor of Marcus Hook in 1977.  He would serve in this post until 1982, receiving nominations on both the Republican and Democratic tickets.  Following a narrowly-lost bid for Congress in 1984, Weldon won the Seventh Congressional seat in 1986.  In Congress, Weldon has taken a leadership role on many issues.  Besides his dedication to first responders, Weldon has also worked tirelessly on issues of defense and security.  Using his role as Vice Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, he has worked on issues such as improved technology and training for our Nation's Armed Services. Combining his work in the fields of education, science and homeland security, Curt created the SMART (Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow) Caucus. This Congressional Caucus has created a cooperative between the region's universities, corporations, and research fields to build upon the strengths of each and improve the vitality of the economy. Weldon also takes an interest in protecting our environment, using his position on the Ocean's Caucus and Migratory Bird Commission to fight for legislation which protects the oceans and marshlands.  Weldon was instrumental in securing the protection of the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum as well as the Paoli, Brandywine and Valley Forge battlefields and historic cites.  Weldon takes an imitative for establishing the Center for Rotorcraft Innovation which cooperates with the rotorcraft industry in area of an advanced technology. Weldon also serves as a member of the Homeland Security Committee, and Science Committee, where he works on issues of research, emergency preparedness, intelligence, and energy.  While serving his constituents on the hill, Congressman Weldon, the father of five children, still makes his home in the Seventh District, residing in Thornbury Township with his wife, Mary Gallagher Weldon.
