Rebellion in Upper and lower Canada Created by: Michael Lewis, Chelsey Walters, Reece Schonheiter, Kyra Griffin
1837-1838 • 1830’s: People were unhappy with the government in upper and lower Canada. • 1837: British Government rejected all demands from the Patriotes causing some people to rebel. • November 1837: The Patriotes were victorious in saint Denis but British government won at saint Charles causing Papineau (leader of the rebels) to flee to the Americans. • 1837: The Patriotes had one last impact on the Canadien: Their last affect was to cause the Francophone’s to feel wronged by the British government. • 1838: Lord Durham was sent to Canada to find out what caused the Patriotes to rebel against the British Government.
Upper and Lower Canada • Papineau Travelled throughout the Colony urging the Canadien to take up arms. Fighting then broke out in November 1837 in Saint Denis. • The real power was in the hands of the governor and the two councils. • Rebellion in Upper Canada: Unrest was brewing in upper Canada, too. A Scottish immigrant named William Lyon Mackenzie led the reformers in 1834. • Durham blamed the troubles in lower Canada on one thing: the conflict between the French and British Colonists. • When upper Canada became part of a country/city lower Canada had become part of Canada too.
Louis-Joseph Papineau & William Lyon Mackenzie • Louis-Joseph Papineau • Led a group called the Patriotes. • The represented the Ninety Two Resolutions. • Won 75% of votes for the Patriotes demands (They thought that surely now the British Government would not deny them, However the Government did deny their demands still.) • Started War in 1837, Saint Denis. • He also fled to the Americans for he was overpowered by the British Government. • William Lyon Mackenzie • Led the Reformers. • 1834: William and the reformers Issued The seventh Report on Grievances enlisted their demands. • William and the reformers led about 700 rebels to Toronto with weapons to fight with. • After the Rebellion, like Papineau, William fled to the Americans for safety against the British.
Creating a Responsible Government. • After British won the war against the French they had to make a substantial Government. • The government was to maintain the French and Choose British Leaders. • Each Colony had its own governor and an elected assembly. • Everyone complained to the Government that they never listened to their complaints or suggestions. • Durham (After five months of being in Canada) decided that two changes had to be made for the government to have respect and power: • Unite Upper and Lower Canada. • Grant the Colonies responsible government.
