PROJECT GOALS • Ultimate goal “A working DCS ready for exploitation end 2005 allowing to control and operate the experiment during all modes of operation and according to defined requirements”. • Final assembly and commissioning “Individual DCS’s ready to be used during final assembly and commissioning end 2004”. • Intermediate goals • Milestones to be established in ALICE Controls Board. PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT • Study, evaluate ‘standard solutions’, ex. • Ways of measuring temperatures • control of HV systems • monitoring of LV power supplies • Complete end-to-end detector controls slice • use of framework tools; configuration, logging, alarms, etc • Test cases with some detector groups • Identify needs with ACB • “Hands-on” experience DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

RESPONSABILITIES (1) • ALICE Controls Co-ordination (ACC) • co-ordinate the project execution; monitor, follow-up • give guidelines • give assistance (manpower limited) • provide common facilities • provide interfaces to external systems • give access to common tools and components DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  13. RESPONSABILITIES (2) • Detector Groups • design and implement the control of their detector • respect technical spec., planning and agreed budget • participate in ALICE Controls Board (ACB), share decisions, follow guidelines & recommendations as far as possible DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  14. RESPONSABILITIES (3) • ALICE Controls Board (ACB) • Principal steering group for ALICE controls • Each detector and service group represented • Open to all • Chaired by Controls Co-ordinator • Executive in technical matters • Reports to Technical Board DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

RESPONSABILITIES (4) • Services Groups • Magnets • Electricity • Gas • Cooling & Ventilation • Access • Alarms & Safety • design and implement the control of their service • respect technical spec., planning and agreed budget • ALICE controls link-man co-ordinates and follows-up • link-man represents the service in ACB DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  16. RESPONSABILITIES (5) • DAQ, Trigger, Offline, LHC machine • interfaces subject to common projects • roles and responsibilities to be defined • IT Controls Group • co-ordinate the execution of JCOP • execute the mandate of JCOP in collaboration with the LHC experiments • provide and support common components and tools defined by JCOP • Joint Controls Project (JCOP) • provide common framework of tools and components DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  17. MANPOWER (1) • Controls Co-ordinator • Leader of ACC team • Leader of the DCS project • Chairs ACB • Represents DCS in TB and ALICE in JCOP • Common supervisory facilities- 2 software engineers or equivalent - • Global DCS architecture • Connection mechanisms and common functions • Interfacing to external services • Interfacing to DAQ, TRG, Offline, LHC machine DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  18. MANPOWER (2) • Process control and field layer- 1 engineer or equivalent and 2 technicians - • Principal interface to the detector groups • Global DCS architecture • Connection mechanisms and common functions • test-lab and prototyping of ‘standard solutions’ • advice and assist detector groups DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén

  19. INITIAL STEPS • Agree on project definition • Establish resources, create ACC team • Establish ACB • Define organization of work • Identify applications for prototyping • Define milestones and detailed planning • Start regular progress meetings DCS Workshop - L.Jirdén
