EXAMPLE OF BELIEVERS “Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe” (I Tim. 4:12).
An Exhortation • How important are young people to us? • Sometimes the biggest detriment to their development is the attitude of older people. • Jealousy, envy, distrust. • Some things we can’t change, but “give no man reason”. • How did Paul esteem Timothy?
Example in Word • Serious or silly? (James 3:2) What does our “grammar” say about us? Spiritual or worldly? Uplifting or depressing? Respectful or disrespectful? • Titus 2:8; Matt. 12:36-37 • How does the Lord view gossip? Deceit? • How about teasing? Flirting? • Ear pollution begins with someone’s mouth. • Psalm 19:14
Manner of Life • KJV uses “conversation”. • We communicate by the way we live. • Conform to Christ – Rom. 8:29 • Imitate God – Eph. 5:1 • A living sacrifice – Rom. 12:1
Example in Love • Not courtship – though that should be governed by “agape”. • John 3:16; Matt. 22:37ff • Love in action: Give clothing to needy. Help someone with homework (or any task). Volunteer in hospital, library. Visit the sick or lonely. • Take someone for a ride in the country. Give blood. Give a good book to someone. Babysit so some young couple can go on a date. • Teach someone about Jesus.
Example in Faith • Rev. 2:10 – mature in faith to this point. • Stand with courage – Eph. 6 • But with kindness – 2 Tim. 2:24ff. “Heroes” of the faith, or just defenders. • And Love – Eph. 3:15
Examples in Purity • Matt. 5:8 – it begins in the heart. • Purity vs. the alcohol industry. • Purity vs. the sex industry. • It’s a difficult time for one seeking purity. It always has been. • “We’ve made sewers of our eyes and ears and a septic tank of our heart by heaping to ourselves the filth of the flesh.” • I Tim. 5:22
