  1. Data for Priority Setting in Small Doses # 4 HIV Prevention Data: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) PA Uniform Data System (PAUDS) May 7, 2012 1

  2. Overview • Presentation will examine sexually transmitted infections (STI) data for the SW region. • Data on HIV prevention activities from agencies funded in the region from PA State HIV funds will also be presented. • STI data in this presentation are for calendar year 2010. PAUDS data are for 2011.

  3. Overview (Continued) • PA Department of Health collects STI surveillance reports from laboratories and providers, and makes this information available to Coalitions. • Agencies funded for HIV prevention activities enter contact information into the Pennsylvania Uniform Data System (PAUDS) software and the data are made available to Coalitions quarterly.

  4. Limitations • Under-reporting of cases may occur for STIs but generally, STI symptoms are such that folks present for treatment. • PAUDS data capture activities of regional agencies that are funded for HIV prevention services. Other agencies may be conducting HIV prevention services which are not captured in PAUDS.

  5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) • We can use information on populations with STIs (age, race, gender) to project who may be at risk and may need HIV prevention information. • STIs measure unprotected sexual activities. STI lesions increase the likelihood of transmission of HIV.

  6. Sexually Transmitted Infections • For this presentation, we have merged Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Syphilis data for 2010. • There were 9,886 cases of these 3 STIs reported in 2010 in the southwest region. - Gonorrhea (2,172 cases) - Chlamydia (7,676 cases) - All Syphilis (38 cases)

  7. Sexually Transmitted Infections by Gender

  8. Pennsylvania Uniform Data System (PAUDS) HIV Prevention activities

  9. HIV Prevention Activities • Pennsylvania Uniform Data System (PAUDS) is used by agencies contracted in the southwest region to report their activities. • Data presented are only from to those agencies that were granted State 656 funds for HIV prevention services. • Bear in mind that there are other HIV prevention services going on in the region that are funded from non-State 656 sources.

  10. Prevention Services Abbreviations • IDI – Interventions Delivered to Individuals • IDG – Interventions Delivered to Groups • HCPI – Health Communication Public Information • CRCS - Comprehensive Risk and Counseling Services • IDU – Intravenous Drug Use • Heterosex. – Heterosexual contact • MSM – Men who have Sex with Men • MSM+IDU – Men who have Sex with Men who are Intravenous Drug Users

  11. SUMMARY • Chlamydia is the most common of the 3 STI (78%). • About two-thirds of all STIs are reported in Allegheny County. • In the rural counties, Beaver, Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette and Cambria have the highest number of cases. • Females are more likely to be reported with STI than males. • Younger age groups (15-19, 20-24, and 25-29) bear the highest burden of all STIs. • Blacks make up slightly over half of the 2010 STIs.

  12. Summary (continued) • From the PAUDS 2011 reports, a total of 7069 contacts were made. • 33% of the HIV prevention contacts made was to individuals with IDU risk, 14% to heterosexual, 9% to MSM, 41% to General Public, and about 2% to Mothers with risk. • From 2005-2011, the number of contacts made decreased steadily from 2005-2009; in 2011, an increase over 2009 is observed. • Contacts made to the General Public decreased from 2005 to 2009 but increased in 2011.

  13. Summary (continued) • IDI is the most common intervention made to contacts (about 40% of all interventions), followed by outreach and IDG. • About 73% of all contacts is White; Blacks 25%. • Males make up over two-thirds of all contacts. • Age group 20-29 make up about one-third of all contacts.
