What is ENUM? • Based on Domain Name System (DNS) • Same as internet domain names • DNS service: • User types in domain (key) into browser etc • DNS lookup performed • Lookup yields onward routing information • Information for mail delivery, website etc • In ENUM • Telephone number is used as key

How does ENUM work? • tElephone NUmber Mapping • Electronic Numbering • Protocol defined by IETF (RFC3761) • ENUM is a means to map telephone numbers to internet addresses • Uses well established Domain Name System • IENUM Limited launched commercial Irish ENUM service in May 2007
How does ENUM work? • An ENUM lookup has two components • Telephone number conversion to domain : • +353-1-2365409 becomes :- • 35312365409 • 3.5.3.1.2.3.6.5.4.0.9 • 9.0.4.5.6.3.2.1.3.5.3 9.0.4.5.6.3.2.1.3.5.3.e164.arpa • This domain is then used as a key to lookup internet services/addresses • Query for NAPTR RR in DNS:- • NAPTR format similar to MX record, order & preference fields • NAPTR payload can contain SIP addr, email addr etc • All done in software

ENUM Summary • "ENUM brings your phone number to the internet“ • Associates internet address with phone numbers • Available to any internet connected device • International standard using existing DNS infrastructure – no new servers needed • Versatile – easy to introduce new applications • Tech-speak: An application of the DNS to refer from E.164 numbers to URIs, and make those references available via DNS resource records • ENUM is • NOT a Voice over IP protocol like SIP or H.323 • NOT a gateway service • NOT a VoIP service provider • ENUM is just one component in the convergence of the PSTN and the Internet. • Everything moving to IP • Enabling technology
ENUM in Ireland Available in Ireland from 30th May from IENUM Limited:- • 7th Country in the world • Tier 1 registry system (www.enum.ie) • Provisioning client toolkit available for registrars • Tier 2 registrar of last resort • web-based interface (www.my-enum.ie) to automate registration and account management • A showcase facility! • Validation Services • Opt-in service reflecting PAB data privacy policy • Authentication to prove “right to use” • Abuse facility for unauthorised use • Number block registration possible
