  15. 4th Hour Raprich Essay • Intro-The flash of a strangely contorted hand is a message. The show of a color, fires warning, or welcome. Gangs exist all over the country and really, in some fashion, all over the world. Often gang members have loyalties to one another that go beyond typical friendships. Thesis-While most people believe that gangs are bothersome and even dangerous, their members find a sense of belonging, protection, and family in them.

  16. 1st Body Paragraph • If you have ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time, you may have experienced the feeling that you are in some one else’s territory. You do not belong, and they do. The members of gangs claim territory and only “those who belong” are welcome. If you are not one of “them,” you might be in danger. The risk could be simply bullying or harassment until you leave. It could be a physical altercation, or it could mean your life is in danger.

  17. 2nd Paragraph • If you are a member of a gang, however, you are of course welcome in the gang’s territory; you belong there. Often times, gangs are made up of youth who have the desire to fit in and that desire is not being met at home. The average gang member’s family is usually lacking one or both parents and the financial ability to maintain frequent family gatherings and therefore relationships.

  18. 3rd • While the responsible party in the family, often times a single and poverty-stricken mother or grandparent, is trying to do their best to support the family, the teens and young adults are left to find the emotional support and wellbeing that they desperately crave.
