Summary of IVA observed activity in and around City Hall on 5/25-5/26/2013
Person over fence alert • An alert was configured to detect object passing over the perimeter fence (e.g. person climbing over fence). • The view was from a long distance and the video quality was poor. • Two tests were conducted • Person climbing over the fence • Coat thrown over fence • The person climbing over the fence was not detected. Probable cause: The small size and poor contrast of the person caused IVA to discard their track as noise. • The coat being thrown over the fence generated two alerts
Traffic patterns on surround streets • Traffic was monitored on two streets in the vicinity of Boston Calling • Car traffic was counted on Court Street near the intersection with Washington. • Traffic was counted on Congress in front of City Hall
Court Street Traffic 1 • A distinct increase in traffic was noted on Court St. between 12:30 and 2:00 Saturday. This corresponds well to the official start time of the concert at 1:00.
Court Street Traffic 2 • A second surge in traffic volume was noted on Court St. between the hours of 6 pm and 11 pm. This roughly corresponds to the height of the concert in the evening through the end of the concert about 10:30 pm.
Court Street Traffic 3 • Traffic volume was uniformly high all day on Sunday.
Congress Street Traffic 1 • A surge in traffic was ntoed on Congress street between about 1:30 pm and 3:pm Saturday. This roughly corresponds to the peak arrival time of people for the concert.
Congress Street Traffic 2 • Spikes of activity were also noted on Congress St. at around 6 pm and 8:30 pm Saturday. • Note that there were surges in people entering the concert at these times (see later slide).
Congress Street Traffic 2 • Like Court St., traffic volume on Congress was notably higher Sunday than Saturday. Traffic surged around 1pm, corresponding the beginning of the concert, and dropped significantly around 7 pm.
People Entering • People were counted entering the concert using alerts that covered 5 entrance lanes. • Note that these numbers do not correspond to actual numbers of people. Those numbers will be computed shortly.
People Entering Saturday • Large surges of people entering were noted starting about 1:00 pm Saturday, then again about 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. • Note that these afternoon surges correspond very well to the increases of traffic on Congress street that day.
People Entering Sunday • The number of people entering Sunday was significantly higher than Saturday, but there were no surges late in the afternoon. • Note that this pattern is very similar to the observed traffic on Congress St. Sunday.
Key Observations • Note that the pattern of vehicle activity on Congress St both Saturday and Sunday matches very closely the pattern of people entering the concert. • Traffic on Court St. Saturday surged at the time people were beginning to enter the concert. • Overall, traffic on Sunday was significantly higher than Saturday.
