Introduction • ISIS MISSIONS Provide BroadBand for All by the use of optical technologies for high speed and broadband wireless communications, through : • Stimulation of the restructuring of the Photonics-Wireless research community • Stimulation of new opportunities for Photonics-Wireless integration in a wide range of platforms • Implementation of a strong vertical link in Europe between Academic partners, SMEs and Industries allowing a more efficient technology transfer from the universities to the industrial applications. • Dissemination of the knowledge

  4. ISIS STRATEGIC GOALS • ISIS Philosophy : allow highly-flexible infrastructures on broadband architectures, technologies and characterisation • ISIS Strategy : from Integration to Platforms and Spreading

ISIS STRUCTURE • 5 Work packages • 3 Platforms dedicated to Broadband Access • Strong dissemination activities • 5 Workshops and 2 Summer-schools • 34 (permanent) + 21 (PhD) Exchanges of researchers • Number of partners: 16 academic + 4 industrial • Strong industrial involvement : - 4 industries participating - 2 industries + 2 SMEs associated in the executive committee

INTEGRATION AND PLATFORMS Creation of platforms for joint research : Creation of an infrastructure that will allow better interaction and collaboration between European specialists with complementary expertise. This will allow for easier evaluation/comparison/combination of different technologies. • JPB-AF, Platform on Broadband Architectures and Functions • JPB-TD, Platform on Broadband Optoelectronic technologies and low costs components • JPB-CT, Platform on Broadband Characterisation and Test

Two partners per platform (total of 6 partners for the 3 above platforms) dedicate part-time their own engineering staff to manage the integration work. • The 6 partners holding these part-time engineer positions are: • JPB-AF : UniKent, (CR4) and Tue (CR16) • JPB-TD : CNRS-IEMN (CR1) and UDE (CR3) • JPB-CT : UniLeeds (CR5) and UCL (CR19)

INTEGRATION AND SPREADING Four goals : • Exchanges of staff : Enhancement of knowledge and technology transfer between partners • Organisation of workshops and summer-schools : Promotion of Optoelectronics for Broadband applications in education so that Europe is better placed to take advantage of future opportunities and growth in this area. • Education through training courses • Publications in common, joint projects

WP1 overview and objectives • Consists of integration and research activities: • Former mainly linked to setting up of a joint platform of testbeds • Latter to joint research activities using complementary knowledge/skills • Integration part: the joint platform (setting-up phase: first 18 months) • JPB-AF: Joint Platform on Broadband Optoelectronic Architectures and Functions Systems/subsytems and advanced techniques oriented • Joint research activities part: defined in 5 different tasks • T1.1: Digital-over-fibre and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) • T1.2: Radio over fibre (RoF) and fibre-fed remote antennas • T1.3: Innovative architectures for future communication systems • T1.4: All-optical signal processing • T1.5: Wireless systems and related air-interfaces
