Inventions, Spring 2012, NYUAD Beltrator Project Joseph Juma, DmitriyTretyakov, As. Professor HaiweiDong As.Professor Nikolas Giakoumidis
Functionality of the Invention • It detects objects moving towards the user at dangerous speeds • It triggers vibration to alarm the user of the danger • It constantly keep track of the moving objects around the user
Mechanism Used • Laser technology is used to scan a range of 25m and an angle of 270degrees. Diagram above shows the robot scanning
Mechanism Used • The values of x-y position and range of objects in the scan region are stored in a matrix. • This values are updated by the scanner every 0.02 seconds (50Hz). • The algorithm used recognizes objects in the range and stores the position and range of them • After every update the new matrix contains new x-y position and range values • The two matrices entries are then compared to detect any significant displacement change indicating a dangerous APPROACHING OBJECT.
Actuation Process • This phase is important once the signal is processed and that the situation demands the user to be alarmed. • This project used vibration motors as actuators. • Psychological experiments were conducted.
Psychological Experiments • They were done to determine the most sensitive parts of the human skin.
Psychological Experiments • Given that our actuators were vibration motors it was sensible for us to pick the neck region to send an alarm as seen from the table above. • It was also noted that human would turn to the direction the stimuli was applied on the neck. This was what we needed.
Project Development • Laser measurements collection and analysis took precedence in our project. This was required for program coding. Sample below:
Project Development • We then set to establish communication between PC and Vibrator circuits. Arduino program was used.
Design necklace actuator • The design made sure its easy for one to wear the necklace and remove it easily. • The necklace was also as light as possible, used the smallest available vibrators
Prototype • To limit the size of the components and establishing a wireless communication between the laser-PC-vibrator was necessary to come up with the full fledged product • Due to constraints of time this was not possible. We therefore stuck to the huge sick laser robot as our prototype. • For the signaling the computer program would play a sound if someone is fast approaching the robot
Future Developments • We would focus more on establishing the wireless interface. • Reduce considerably the size of the product and make it as light and portable as possible. May be use flat vibrators.
Marketing Strategy • Link and tap into existing network of safety garments producers • Allow the innovation flow into other spheres and not just construction • Present this knowledge to governmental offices around Abu Dhabi to kick start the program in Abu Dhabi before spreading wide to the world
