  1. Welcome to Wolf Publications Mrs. Hensley&Mrs. Welker Senior Executive Editors

What do editors do? • Editing is the process of selecting and preparing text used to convey information through the processes of correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications performed with an intention of producing a correct, consistent, accurate, and complete work. • The editing process often begins with the author's idea for the work itself, continuing as a collaboration between the author and the editors as the work is created. As such, editing is a practice that includes creative skills, human relations, and a precise set of methods.

  3. The Situation This season, approximately 90 business-savvy contestants will compete, not only for a job with the Wolf Publications Organization, but for the prize of publishing a collection of nonfiction texts to represent our world-famous publications: • “Wolves in the Know” • “The Tech-Savvy Wolf” • “The Scientific Wolverine” • The last team standing will be "hired" as the Wolf Publication’s Apprentices and have the honor of attending a lunch with the bosses and fellow team winners.

  4. Purpose and Performance • Your job is to compile the most appealing collection of magazine articles possible that cover a variety of topics and text structures. • The final task will end in the Board Room, where contestants must account for their actions and be judged by Mrs. Hensley, Mrs. Welker, fellow contestants, and expert guest advisors.

  5. Performance • Everyday, the teams of contestants will work together, each under the guidance of a designated managing editor, to compete in editorial-driven tasks, using their knowledge, along with their proven ability to examine and evaluate text, to win the challenge. • Contestants are subjected to long hours, grueling deadlines, intellectual challenges, personality differences and intense scrutiny under the careful watch of Mrs. Hensley and Mrs. Welker. • Challenges encourage contestants to read and find authentic, reliable texts that will appeal to their target audience, your peers. Contestants must reach out to their network for assistance and feedback.

  6. Process • Editing teams will receive articles submitted by various authors. It will be your team’s task to determine if the article should be accepted and published in our magazine. • Each magazine must have all 5 text structures represented in their final magazine. • Description • Sequence • Compare/Contrast • Cause/Effect • Problem/Solution

  7. Tools for Success • Mailbox • Every team will have a mailbox. Your Chief Editor will send all correspondence, including prepareds, through your mailbox. It is important to check your mailbox each day. • Think Board • This board will be utilized to display your various magazine articles and your teams’ thinking process in progress. This is a communication tool to display your hard work for the Senior Chief Editor. • Resource Handbook • Your Chief Editor will be giving each contestant resources to use to help you determine if an article meets our criteria of acceptance. All resource items will be kept in your communication arts notebook/binder behind the power time tab.

First Steps of the Task :As a team, you will be preliminary deciding if your division will reject or POSSIBLY accept the article • Once you receive an author’s submission to appear in your magazine, you must determine if the article will work for the magazine. • Working together, follow the 4 outlined steps and complete form R3Ce Accuracy of Information

  10. Second Steps of the Task :As a team, decide if you will reject or POSSIBLY accept this article for your magazine. If article not is reliable, then… • Complete form R3Ce Accuracy of Informationexplaining your decision to reject the article. • Our administrative assistants will write a letter of rejection notifying the author of your decision. • Move onto to your next project If article is reliable, then… • Complete form R3Ce Accuracy of Informationexplaining your decision to possibly accept the article. • Move onto the next steps which will require your team to evenly distribute the “Forms of Analysis” to determine if your team will accept or reject the article

  11. The Third Steps of the Task Your team will now complete the individual analysis forms to determine if this is the best article for your magazine. Each team member must complete at least one form for each article. Team members must complete a different form for each article. Graphically Organize • Choose the best graphic organizer to match the article’s text structure AND paraphrase the main ideas and supporting details of the text. This will help you remember specific information which will help guide your teams’ decision whether it should make the final cut. • Forms R3Cf, R3Ca, R3Cg ,R3Cj, R3Ck Summarize • Provide a summary of the article so the senior executive editor can quickly understand the article. • Forms R3Cf, R3Ca, R3Cg ,R3Cj, R3Ck Author’s Viepoint: • What is the author’s viewpoint? Is there a slant to the article? Are there 2 sides presented? • Form R3Ci Effectiveness of the Solution • Identify the overall problem and evaluate the solution or possible solutions presented by the author. • Form R3Ck

  12. Accept or Reject? • Once all five forms are complete, determine as a team if your team will accept OR reject the article. 1. Accuracy of Information • Form R3Ce 2. Problem Solving Process & Effectiveness of its Solution • Form R3Ck • The author of your article will be notified that his or her article will be appearing in your magazine OR will receive a letter of rejection if the articles not accepted.
