Process • Contact Periods: • Contact Period: Coach can go to the recruit’s home and visit with the recruit and his family/coaches. • Evaluation Period: AKA the “visit” period, college coaches can visit the school, talk to coaches, and even watch practice, but cannot talk directly to the recruit. • Quiet Period: When the recruits can visit the school, but the coaches can only talk to them while they are on campus. • Dead Period: No face to face contact with the recruit. • Coaches can make phone calls during recruits during all periods. • Contact Periods Calendar
Process • College Visits • Can have 5 visits during the CONTACT, VISIT, or QUIET periods. • Need to have a cleared transcript and SAT score to the College prior to the visit (can be provided by Coach and/or Counselors at school)
Process • Signing Day: National Signing Day is the 1st Wednesday in February, this year February 3rd.
Decision: To play or not to Play? • Considerations • School Considerations: • Regional • Size • Academic rigor and degrees • Stopover or Bachelor’s Degree? (JUCO vs. 4 yr. school) • Acceptance? • Best interests for the future • Player’s talent level • Honest evaluation by coaches, college coaches, and yourself • Scholarship Considerations: • Only way to school? • Full, partial, or walk-on • Academic vs. Athletic • Financial Situation: • Current • Future debt from borrowing
Marketing the Athlete • Contacting the School • General interest forms • Letters of interest • Interest forms from High School coaches • Film • Highlight Film vs. Game Film • Sending it out: “trolling” or “targeting”?
Marketing the Athlete • Recruiting Services • Different levels of service • General contact through use of technology • “Go Between” for player and college program • Be careful, and get references from other parents and coaches.
Communication • High School Coaches • Let them know where you are with playing, and when that changes, let them know! • College Coaches • Again, communication is vital. It lets both parties know where they are in the process, and it creates a positive impression on the coach.
