Multiple Roles Parents Play Throughout the Family Life Cycle
Stages in the Family Life Cycle • Married Couple • Couple with preschool children • Families with school age children • Launching (Children leaving home) • Empty Nest (No children left at home) • Aging
Married Couple • Establishing roles within the family: • Learning to be a family • Establishing roles as husband and wife • Decision makers
Couple w/ Preschoolers • Play the roles of: • Nurturers (Caregivers) • Protectors • Teacher • Doctor/nurse • Playmate
Couple w/ School Age • Roles include: • Nurturers (Caregivers) • Protectors • Teacher • Doctor/nurse • Cook
Driver • Counselor & Coach • Activities Director • And more
Launching • Roles may include: • Counselor/Advisor • Friend • Supporter & Confidant
Empty Nest • Roles are similar to the launching cycle but may also include: • Grandparent
Aging • May still fulfill some of the same roles as in earlier stages of the family life cycle
Roles may become reversed with the children taking on the role of caregiver
For Discussion • As the family life cycle continues into aging, what roles do you see parents playing? What about their grown children? • How would roles differ for families who remain childless?
