Does the book tell a good story? “They call our Mayflower a ‘sweet ship’ because she was in the Portuguese wine trade and had not for a long time carried smelly things like fish and tar and turpentine.” This story is in diary form of a girl traveling to the New World because of her religion for a better life.

  3. Is the story accurate and authentic in its historical detail, including the setting and the known events in history? “We are journeying to the New World. It is the Mayflower that be getting us there, slowly. She measures ninety feet in length and twenty five feet in breadth at the broadest point.” The text makes references to having to journey because of their religion as well as how big the Mayflower was and what life was like on the Mayflower through the diary of a girl.

  4. Is the language authentic to its time? The language used in the story is old English. She uses words such as “So ‘tis our hearts that lead us” and “feathered men and feathered women and feathered babies…who do paint their faces ‘tis said, and live in most uncommon shelters.

  5. Is the historical interpretation sound? The books starts off with Remember starting the journey to the New World. She writes on a daily basis and even does a countdown of how many miles she has traveled on her journey.

  6. Whose voices are missing? Remember is the only real voice in the story. She talks about other people on the ship but none of them have voices within the diary.

  7. Does the book provide insight and understanding into current issues as well as those in the past? “…it is forbidden for the children to go onto the upper deck what with the pitching and rolling and the waves thrashing and crashing. And if we didn’t fall over, one of the sailors might throw us over.” This story gives us an insight of the struggles the passengers of the Mayflower faced.

  8. Instructional Strategies This book will be good for students who are interested in reading about the Mayflower to do in independent reading. It gives students an idea of what life was like for someone their own age.
