  2. William the Conqueror and the Bayeux Tapestry • Illustration of a section of the Bayeux Tapestry depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The 11th-century embroidered tapestry measures over 230 feet in length and recounts the Norman conquest of England.

William the Conqueror • 1027-1087 • From Normandy, France • Conquered England in 1066 • Commissioned the Domesday Book: land survey that also reveals the social hierarchy at the time The Domesday Book was commissioned by William the Conqueror to uncover the economic and martial resources of England. The survey that resulted in the book began in 1086 A.D. The Domesday book provides valuable insight into the world of 11th-century England.

After William the Conqueror… • Henry I (Reign: 1100-1135) • Youngest son of W the C • Issued a doctrine called the Coronation Charter: made the office of king answerable to certain laws regarding the treatment of the barons and clergy • The first known financial records of England, date from his reign as does the first Exchequer, the financial agency of the English government.

Henry II (Henry I’s grandson) • Reign: 1154-1189 • Reforms to weaken feudal law and strengthen the throne. • Replaced incompetent and corrupt sheriffs and revitalized the Exchequer, enforcing fiscal responsibility and effective tax collection. • In 1166: Assize of Clarendon: judicial reforms such as: • Replacing feudal and county courts with royal courts • Jury trials • Revising and strengthening basic criminal and land law. • Under the reign of Henry, the first legal textbook would be written, formally codifying the basis for English law. • Friends with Thomas a’Beckett…until his knights killed him…
