What Kind of Crystals? • Nano sized ferroelectric crystals. • Used for things like RAM in computers. • Based on orientation, represents zero or one in binary. • Unlike regular RAM, won’t be wiped if power supply is cut off. • Ferroelectric memory is being used in smart cards today.
The Research • Researchers are trying to discover if nano sized crystals will work better than they do in bulk size. • Research has discovered that the nano sized crystals require less energy and retain any changes. • Physics is used to determine how things act differently on a nano scale.
Future Possibilities • Future plans would be to use crystals to replace RAM. • Extra battery wouldn’t be need for the RAM with crystals, leading to smaller electronics.
