Periodic Table of Elements 8th Grade Science
WARM UP: • Update your Table of Contents • Write your homework – leave it out to be stamped – vocab cards out to be checked • Put your Atom’s Family Album in the basket! • Complete the “Atomic Structure: Helpful Hints Cheat Sheet”
Remember! • We learned 2 ways to represent an element: Sodium
Lets try our math a different way today! Atomic # = __________ Atomic Mass = ________ # of Protons = _________ # of Neutrons = ________ # of Electrons = ________ Element Name: ________ Element Symbol: ______
One More Time… Atomic # = __________ Atomic Mass = ________ # of Protons = _________ # of Neutrons = ________ # of Electrons = ________ Element Name: ________ Element Symbol: ______
Remember! • Elements are substances that are made of only one type of atom!
Remember! • Each element alone is like an ingredient in a recipe…we combine different elements together to make all the different types of matter in the universe!
The Periodic Table • Organizes all of the elements based on properties and atomic number of the elements
Guess What????? • It’s time to get your very own copy of your new best friend…The Periodic Table!
Color Code your Periodic Table! • 3 Sections of the Periodic Table: • METALS = YELLOW • NONMETALS = GREEN • METALLOIDS = PINK • Use textbook pg. D20-D21…you have 5 minutes to color and create a key! • You can use different colors, but you must use the same pattern you see in the book! • Do NOT use markers!
Knights of the Periodic Table • Once upon a time in a land far, far away, there were 3 kingdoms. Each kingdom had it’s own royal “families,” and each family member had their own very unique personality. Like in every family, some of them were very well behaved…and others were quite naughty, but one thing is for sure, every time the family members from different kingdoms came into contact with each other it caused quite a reaction!
Knights of the Periodic Table Analogy There are 3 sections or “Kingdoms” of the Periodic Table: • Metal Kingdom = • Metalloid Kingdom = • Nonmetal Kingdom = Each character is meant to represent a different group and their unique properties…
Knights of the Periodic Table Analogy • Hydrogen the Court Jester • Different from any of the other elements • Nonmetal • Has 0 neutrons
Partner Up! • Read about the characters from each Kingdom on the Periodic Table from the packet provided • Fill in the “Periodic Table Family Tree” for each character • This is a way for you to make connections and remember information about each of the Kingdoms and groups on the Periodic Table, so make it count because you will need this for your homework!!
Reading the periodic table • Period – Row across the periodic table (tells you how many electron shells there are)
Reading the periodic table - • Group – Column going down the periodic table (how many valence electrons there are…but there is a trick)
“Kingdoms” of the Periodic Table • Metal – Left side of the periodic table • Broken in to two regions: • Reactive metals • Group 1 – Alkali • Group 2 – Alkaline • Nonreactive metals • Groups 3-12 are the Transition metals
“Kingdoms” of the Periodic Table • Nonmetals – right side of the periodic table • Two groups • Group 17 - Halogens • Very reactive gases • Group 18 -Noble Gases • Nonreactive gases Noble Gases Halogens
Kingdoms of the Periodic Table • Metalloids - Found on the zig-zag steps • Have properties of metals and nonmetals
Homework: RAFT • R = Role • A = Audience • F = Format • T = Topic For example…I used my “Knights of the Periodic Table” fairytale analogy to teach you! • R = Teacher • A = My students • F = Fairytale analogy • T = The structure of the Periodic Table Let’s think of some other options…
