  4. About Me… • Mrs. McKinnon is from Jacksonville, North Carolina and graduated from Elon University in 2006. • Mrs. McKinnon is half Japanese. Her mother is from Japan and her father is from Illinois (he’s white). • Mrs. McKinnon enjoys reading books and loves her Kindle! After schools she goes home and reads or plays games where she kills things. • Mrs. McKinnon enjoys watching Grey’s Anatomy, Lie to Me*, House, Fringe, and Glee. Her favorite invention is the DVR. • Mrs. McKinnon also enjoys swimming, video games, and colorful decorations. • Mrs. McKinnon’s Favorite color is purple!

  7. Grading Mastery Quizzes – 50% Practice Work – 50% EOC- 25% of final grade

  8. Bathroom Passes Use the bathroom before class. Absolutely no passes the 1st 20 minutes after class begins, and the 20 minutes before class ends. NO EXCEPTIONS- DON’T ASK.

  9. Bring Every Day… • 3-Ring Binder. Required by Friday, Sept 2nd. • Pencils • Paper • Electronics PUT AWAY and OFF. • If you forget something, here’s what to do… • Pencils – There are pencils in the back of the room. • Paper – ASK! • Handouts – follow along the best you can if there are no additional copies to be provided.

Make Up Work • When you are absent: • On the following day check your folders for any handouts. • Ask Mrs. McKinnon when you can stay after if you need to make up a mastery quiz. • If the materials are not in your folder, ask Mrs. McKinnon for them at an appropriate time. • If you have a zero and would like to make it up: • You must stay after school with Mrs. McKinnon and complete the assignment with her. • Tutoring days are listed on the board at the side of the classroom.

  11. If you are tardy…. • Please come into class quietly. Leave your pass on table in the back of the room, get your calculator, and start on the activity we are doing in class. Before you leave make sure that you turn in your homework.

  12. We begin class everyday with… Warm-ups. Your warm-up will we located on the front board. Come in, sit down, get started. Do not wait for the bell to begin working!

  13. We will end class with… Exit Tickets or a Mastery Quiz Purpose is to assess what you learned in class They will be graded! Mastery Quizzes can be taken as many times as needed (after tutoring) until you score 85% on each MQ.

  14. Calculators We have a procedure for calculators that must be followed, NO EXCEPTIONS! You are responsible for the calculator labeled with the number that matches your desk number. Calculators and batteries will be checked before anyone leaves class for the day.

  16. Raising a number to a power To raise a number to the 2nd power….. X2 key OR ∧ key Find 62 (try it both ways) To Find 63, use the ^ key

  18. Finding the Square Root The opposite of raising a number to the 2nd power is finding the square root of a number Use the √ key by hitting the 2nd and x2 keys. √36 = 6

  20. Changing a % to a decimal Often, you will be asked to find the % of a number. You cannot plug a percent into a calculator. To do this, change the percent to a decimal. Percent literally means out of 100 (or divided by 100). 25% = 25/100 = 0.25

  22. Convert a fraction to a decimal Use the ÷ key ½ = 1 ÷ 2 = .5

  24. Convert a decimal to a fraction Use the following sequence of keys to change a decimal to a fraction Math Enter Enter 0.5 Math Enter Enter = ½

  25. You try it… Convert the following decimals to fractions: .75 .90 1.25 .33 2.25

  26. Operations with Integers • USE THE (-) KEY NOT THE – KEY TO MAKE A NUMBER NEGATIVE! • 1 + -2 = -1 • -3 * -3 = 9 • -8 / 4 = -2 • 5 - - 3 = 8 • Always type exactly what you see into the calculator!!
