Passive Transport • When a cell moves particles across its membrane without using energy. • Either by Simple Diffusion • Or by Facilitated Diffusion • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfy92hdaAH0&feature=related&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1
Facilitated Diffusion • Is the passive transport of materials across the membrane using transport proteins • Moves materials along the concentration gradient • http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/membrane-channels
Facilitated Diffusion • Channel Proteins • Form channels in proteins that allow specific molecules to flow through • Carrier Proteins • These proteins change shape to allow specific substances to move through
Active Transport • The movement of materials through a membrane AGAINST a concentration gradient • Any movement of molecules inside/outside of a cell that requires ATP • Requires Energy!!!
Active Transport • Only carrier proteins • 1. Substance to be moved binds to transport protein • 2. Protein uses energy (ATP) to change its shape • 3. Substance unbinds and is released
Endocytosis • The Process by which cells surrounds and takes in material from its environment • Takes in a lot and requires a lot of energy • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7yku3sa4Y8&feature=related&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1
Exocytosis • Is the expulsion of materials from a cell. • Moves a lot and requires a lot of energy
Cell Size • Why aren’t cells large? • There are 3 specific reasons
Reason 1 • Diffusion • Is fast and efficient over short distances only
Reason 2 • DNA • The amount of DNA only allows for so many proteins to be made at a time
Reason 3 • Surface area to volume ratio • Surface area increases slower than volume as the cell grows
