Day 114+155 Objectives • Chronicle the advancements of the Allied Powers until they win WW2 in 1945
Turning Points of WW2 • Axis 3 at their peak • Allies will now have a series of victories to collapse the Axis Powers • Two wise men, Churchill and FDR will let their Generals work • Stalin becomes wise and lets his Generals work
TP #1 = El Alamein • What happens? • Rommel pushed into Tunisia • Who comes from Morocco? • IKE!!
c. Mmm…Soft underbelly • Next step is to take Italy • Who is overthrown? • Mussolini • Then put back in power (?) • Germans defend Italy fiercely but lose • Hitler forced to use his forces to clean up Mussolini’s mess
Barbarossa Revisited • Taking Leningrad and Moscow fails • New goal = oil fields of Caucasus Mountains in Southern USSR • Hitler’s Mistake?
TP #2 = Stalingrad!!!!! • Hitler did not have to take it… • Biggest turning point of WW2!!
Battle of Stalingrad • Summer-Winter of 1942 • USSR wins at a price • by the end of WW2, 11 million military deaths • Germans suffer 300K casualties • Russians had better guns and uniforms… • Home Field Adv
c. After Stalingrad… • Germany can’t recover from Stalingrad • USSR begins… • Counter-offensive • Hitler loses just like Napoleon • By 1944, USSR driving through Poland
No Trust • Early 1942, while Stalin is getting bashed by Barbarossa, Churchill at White House and planned WWII • The 3 are now Allies but there is little trust
Here's why • Why did Stalin not trust FDR and WC? • Not as much Lend Lease to him • Felt FDR and WC wanted to destroy him and Communism too…was he right? • Why did FDR and WC not trust Stalin? • They thought Stalin would want to dominate Europe after the war! (?)
a. What did Stalin Want? • 2nd Front • Asked for it for over a year and kept getting nothing from FDR • Stalin was mad that he took the pounding
FDR Was Smart • FDR cared about avoiding too many deaths that would shake the USA’s resolve • USA lost 400K • USSR lost 11 million • This will be part of the straining of USA and USSR’s relationship for the Cold War
Stalin gets his 2nd Front • 4th major Turning Point • June 6, 1944 • D-Day • Beaches of Normandy • Paris later liberated • Rommel misses the battle
c. Battle of the Bulge • Dec-Jan 1944/45 • Germany’s Last Stand • Worst battle in Europe for USA (Year 1 & Archie) • Casualties • USA = 80K • Germany = 120K
Hitler’s Goal? • Cut into what country? • Do what to the American spirits? • And then what? • Germany would AVOID signing UNCONDITIONAL surrender
Outcome of The Battle • Bulge holds and Allies push back • Germany loses best army • Germany is open door in West
Winning the Pacific • Two major turning points • Midway • Coral Sea • Next up • Island Hopping • USA now has • Philippine Islands • Okinawa • Iwo Jima
