Overview • Wolf Robotics Company Background • Robotstudio uses in Application Engineering • Reachstudies • System Optimization • Off-line Programming • Benefits of Off-line Programming • Path Generation & System Simulation • Examples
Wolf Robotics – Company Background • 1944 - Heath Engineering begins, and creates oxy-fuel cutting machines • 1978 - ESAB Automation acquires Heath, and introduces robotic welding solutions to North America • 1993 - ABB acquires ESAB Automation • 2003 - Rimrock Corporation (already ABB’s largest systems integrator) acquires ABB’s North American systems businesses
Wolf Robotics • Welding Division of Rimrock Automation, comprising 3 facilities • Over 80 people focused on robotic arc welding • Located in a 110,000 sq. ft. facility • Expertise in large weldments and heavy arc-welding
Wolf Robotics • Over 6,000 Robotic Arc welding and cutting systems have been installed from the Fort Collins facility since 1978
Bucket System • Dual inverted 2400L robots • Each robot on a two-axis carrier
Trailer Frame System • IRC 5 Robot Controller • Inverted 1600 Robot • 56-ft. of track travel to accommodate large trailer frames
Robotstudio – System Concepts • Evaluation of various system components (positioners, robots, carriers, tools, etc) • Programmed weld paths associated with part model
Off-line Programming - Benefits • Time/Efficiency • Minimize production downtime • Path visualization • Instant adjustment on targets and instructions • Simplified coordinated motion paths • Safely program larger systems
Off-line Programming – Simulation • Validation of complete production program • Collision detection • Cycle time estimation
Arcweld PowerPac • Extension to Robotstudio • Manipulate torch angles: • Work angle • Push/pull angle • Spin angle • Program tactile searches of the weld joint • Define weld instruction parameters
Off-line Programming – Examples • Wheel Loader Frame • Complex approach/departure paths • Four torch necks welding 200+ paths • Multiple external axes • Large weldment with many interior welds
Examples (cont’d) • 3-station system • Invert 2400 Robot • 8 external axes between robot carrier and 3 positioners • Very complicated system
Examples (cont’d) • Trailer Frame • Large Number of Paths (400+) • Symmetrical part with repeat welds • Paths copied and offset or mirrored to generate duplicate weld paths
Summary • Application Engineering • Visualize System Concepts • Evaluate System Components • Generate Fixture Concepts • Offline Programming • Time Saver (Minimize Downtime) • Path Generation • Improved Safety on Large Systems
