Lubrication-Minimize shearing action of two surfaces between which relative motion exists Hydrodynamic lubrication-Sufficient fluid is forced between mating surfaces to insure they do not touch Boundary layer lubrication – Fluid used to partially separate surfaces and to minimize galling or welding of high contact stress points (phosphate esters allow new surfaces to form with lower melting temperature and redistribution of material)
