Apostles’ Creed Study “On the third day he rose again.”
Journal • In your mind, what is the significance of the resurrection of Jesus? • What did it do? • Why does it matter?
Discussion • Scientifically-Speaking… how do we make sense of somebody coming back from the dead? • Our personal experience tells us that once you’re dead, you’re dead • We are relying on the testimony of people who lived thousands of years ago. • God breathed life into existence at the beginning of creation, it is not irrational to think that God can breathe life back into created matter (e.g., bodies). • It is important to investigate a rational and scientific background to our beliefs and not to let a church environment stop us from being reasonable.

Discussion • What is the story of Jesus? • Who was he? • What did he do? • Why did he accomplish? • What did his teachings do? • What did his actions do? • What did his death and resurrection do?
The Bible • Acts 2:22-35 • 22 “You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power.“Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you both see and hear. Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
The Bible • Romans 6:5-7 • 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died is freed from sin.
Christos Anesti! • When Jesus died he took on our sins, his resurrection shows us that he has the power to do that. • It also gives us a hope in our discipleship: we are not just “denying ourselves” to live boring and painful lives, but rather the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus reveals a deeper, truer, more vibrant life than we ever imagined. • The fundamental heart of the Christian message is that Christ reveals a God who loves each person so deeply that he is actively working to redeem each of us. No matter the level or kind of guilt or shame in our lives, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross removes the sting of sin in our lives and assures us that God loves us no matter what. The resurrection of Jesus secures our hope that our sins are forgiven and that we can look forward to a future with God.
Journal • What do you think it means that Jesus was raised on the third day? • What does Jesus’ resurrection call us to do in our daily lives?
