  1. DOE Office of Electric Transmission and Distribution Activities Update IEEE USA Energy Policy Committee Washington, DC September 23, 2004 philip.overholt@hq.doe.gov

  2. Office of of Electric T&D OETD RD&D Analysis Electric Systems RD&D • Transmission Systems • Including high capacity conductors • Distribution and Integration • Including interconnection of distributed energy • Energy Storage • Superconductivity Electric Power Systems Operations and Analysis • Electricity Policy Modeling and Analysis • Provide Check/Balance to the FERC • Electric Markets and Technical Assistance • Electricity Exports • Including Presidential Permits • Power Marketing Administration Liaison

  3. Eastern Interconnection Phasor Project Plan Phase Ia (summer ‘04) • 10-12 Instruments, most are already installed but not connected • Work out communications issues • Transfer software tools to users • Establish relationships Phase II (2005- ) • More than 350 Instruments • Projected benefits from previous slide realized • Vendors participating at all levels • Inexpensive instruments and communications available Phase Ib (late 2004) • ~50 Instruments • Immediate benefits from previous slide realized • All major corridors covered • Data available to research community to begin work on projected benefits

  4. EIPP Working Group • Vision – improve power system reliability through wide-area measurement, monitoring and control • Participating Organizations (as of March 2004) • Task Team Organization

  5. EIPP Reliability Monitoring With Synchronized Phasor Technology Real-time monitoring and alarming of regional angle differences against predefined thresholds

  6. WAPA is Field Testing Composite Conductors • 1 mile –230 kV line in Fargo, ND • Replaced 954 ACSR with 795 ACCR • Installed by WAPA Sept 30, 2002 • Data acquisition started on Oct 3rd • Performing as predicted

  7. Field testing in Fargo required development of medium size ACCR conductor and accessories

  8. Power Electronics (Advanced Materials) Cables and Conductors Substation and Protective Systems Advanced Conductors Sensors Transformers Solid-State Devices Next-Generation Cables Circuit Breakers SiC Switchgear Cable Diagnostics Diamond Fault Current Limiters High-Voltage Testing GridWorks GridWorks takes an integrated perspective of the entire electric system. It is organized to create a cohesive, comprehensive portfolio of equipment that will be introduced into the electric system in a manner that will ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.

  9. “Next generation” technologies for meeting future needs Modernization Technologies for Tomorrow Superconducting Cable • HTS Technologies • “GridWorks” Technologies • Cables • Transformers • Motors • Fault current limiters • Power Electronics • “GridWise” Technologies • Distributed intelligence • Distributed energy • Distributed communications and controls • Advanced Materials Fault current limiter Superconducting Transformer SuperVAR System Advanced Energy Storage Superconducting Flywheel Grid-Friendly Appliance Controller Diamond Devices
