"Health is Wealth" – Without Mental Health, there is no Wealth
People usually neglect Mental Health until signs and symptoms appear and often face denial of mental illness
An uphill battle to have equal opportunities for people with psychiatric disability in terms of education, health and employment
Two major issues of Mental Health need to be addressed to the public – Firstly, the Prevention & Promotion of Mental Health
Secondly, the IdentificationTreatment and Rehabilitation of people with psychiatric disability
On Prevention & Promotion of Good Mental Health • It is everyone's duties, the family, the peers, the employer, the colleagues etc. • It is an area that is mostly neglected in the Workplace when stress and pressure accumulated will create different kinds of mental disorders.
It is now a trend and necessity that the Employer will take on the Family Friendly approach and adopt measures to alleviate stress in the Workplace. • This is an area that the global trend on promotion is to have Advocacy for Global Mental Health which is the theme for the 2008 World Mental Health Day to held on 10/10.
On Identification, Treatment & Rehabilitation of People with Psychiatric Disability • The best way is to have early identification, early treatment and rehabilitation which lead to early recovery from mental illness. • Local evidence of early intervention & treatment will lessen the chance of becoming chronic illness and there are now early prevention programmes being undertaken.
The success of these programmes relies on the parents' identification of adolescents' behaviour and take immediate measures to treat and rehabilitate. • At present in Hong Kong, there are numerous programmes launched, for example, the recent Community Mental Health Intervention Programme.
Depression will be the 2nd major global illness in the 21st Century according to World Health Organisation. • Hong Kong, being a world class city should have a world class approach to deal with the threat of growing Depression prevalence rate.
Mental Health will be a major issue that should deserve our full awareness and attention in the future
