Socialization • Socialization is a process through which new employees/member learn the attitudes, skills and behaviors required to function effectively in their new work environment • In sociology, socialization is the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies of society.  • Socialization encompasses both learning and teaching and is thus "the means by which social and cultural continuity are attained". Socialization is strongly connected to developmental psychology

Organizational socialization • Organizational socialization is defined as a learning and adjustment process that enables an individual to assume an organizational role that fits both organizational and individual needs. • It is a dynamic process that occurs when an individual assumes a new or changing role within an organization

Employee socialization • Socialization, training and developmentare all used to help new/old employees adapt to their new organizations/positions and become fully productive. • Ideally, employees will understand and accept the behaviors desired by the organization, and will be able to attain their own goals by exhibiting these behaviors.

  14. The Outsider-Insider Passage The assumptions of employee socialization: • Socialization is influenced by subtle and less subtle statements and behaviors exhibited by colleagues, management, employees, clients and others. • Individuals adjust to new situations • Employees need time to adjust.

  26. The Purpose of New-Employee Orientation HRM’s Role in Orientation • Coordinating Role: HRM instructs new employees when and where to report; provides information about benefits choices. • Participant Role: HRM offers its assistance for future employee needs (career guidance, training, etc.).
