(4) Types of HS-CC Articulation • Course-to-Course • Advanced Placement • Course Sequencing Credit by Examination (CBE) Title 5 §§55050 • HS students demonstrate proficiency in CC course(s) • Earn CC credit by passing CC exam • Exam approved or conducted by CC faculty of that discipline
CBE Procedure @ • District procedure providing a mechanism for studentsto earn credit for prior learning (3.16P) • (52) courses approved for CBE • Discipline faculty determine exam content • District budget funds faculty time • Fees: same as enrollment in course $46/unit • Limits: (2) attempts; (15) units max per student • Some risk if “grade only” course • Transcripts show code “09”: “earned through examination” • if transfer course, then CBE units transfer to UC/CSU • Note: CBE units earned do not generate FTES
2009: Barriers in CBE Procedure @ • Residency requirement of 12 units: all students • Cost: HS students required to pay fees = to unit enrollment cost • + $17 student health fee • Transportation: CBE conducted at CC site, only • High-risk: failing grades recorded on CC record
inShare 2010: Approval of Revised CBE Procedure @ • Removal of residency requirement entirely + • Special provisions for HS students under articulation agreements, whose HS teachers are designated by CC faculty to proctor CBE: • No CBE fees • No student health fees ($17) • Best Practice, not procedure: only passing grades recorded
Why Offer Credit by Exam? • Recognizes prior learning • Provides student opportunities to advance + earn credit • Shortens student time to complete programs of study • Frees up space in introductory courses • Support certificate/degree completion = Student Success
(52) CBE-Approved Courses @ • Agriculture AGRI 20 • Anatomy ANAT 1, 58, 140 • Animal Science ANSCI 20 • Applied Technology APTECH 53 • Automotive AUTO 100, AUTO 190 • Biology BIO 10 • Business Bookkeeping BBK 50 • Business General BGN 71, 81, 201, 203 • Child Development CHLD 110.1, 110.2 • College Skills CSKLS 100 • Community Health Worker CHW 150 • Computer Studies CS 50.11A, 50.11B, 74.21A, 74.21B, 80.15, 82.21A • Culinary CUL 250, 252.3 • Diesel & Equipment Technology DET 80, 81 • Fire Technology FIRE 71, 77 • Food & Nutrition FDNT 10, 62 • Geography GEOG 3 • Geographic Information Sys GIS 40 • German GERM 1 • Health Care HLC 160 • Health Education HLE 5 • Industrial Education IED 190 • Library & Information Resources LIR 10 • Machine Tool Technology MACH 51A • Mathematics MATH 1A • Meteorology METRO 10 • Music MUSC 2A, 3A • Nursing (Vocational) NRV 51L • Physiology PHYSIO 1 • Psychology PSYCH 4 • Radiologic Tech RADT 60, 61A, 61B • Water Treatment WTR 110 • Wastewater Treatment WWTR 120
inShare Steps for Course CBE Approval @ • Faculty develop comprehensive assessment • Fill out “Revised Course” form + attach exam • Submit to Curriculum Co-chairs • Provide grading criteria • Include statement of rationale • Pay attention to Curriculum Dept timelines
Best Practices: • HS teacher recommends “B” or better students for CBE (per articulation agreement) • Some CC CBE requires a lot time to proctor: look for a way to proctor over 2 class periods at HS site • HS teacher provides “recommended” grades; CC instructor: final grades • Remove risk: CC records only passing grades • New “repeat code:” Record CBE grades of “B” or better, only • CC instructor provides letter to student: eg,“Congratulations! You have earned x # of units in Child Dev, good for X # of degrees/certificates. Please consider continuing your education at SRJC after HS graduation.” • Debrief each fall to strengthen articulation + CBE outcomes
