  4. Materials needed • Each student will need: • Guided notes handout • 2-3 sheets of paper • Pen or pencil

  5. Objectives • Using persuasive language, SWBAT construct a topic sentence for a persuasive essay. • SWBAT construct a counterargument and defense. • DOL: For a given topic, create 1 topic sentence using persuasive language and appeals. • Create one counterargument & defense.

  6. Quick Write-3 minutes • Consider advertising and politicians. How do these people or organizations persuade you to buy (or buy into) whatever they are marketing? • In other words, what strategies or methods do they use to gain your interest, money, vote, etc.?

  7. Art of persuasion-whip around • Everyone Stand Up! • What are some of the strategies or methods that you came up with?

  8. Art of persuasion • Why is this important? • Your ECR prompt for the AS2 will ask you to write a persuasive essay. • We will review some of the skills you need to know in order to write an effective persuasive argument.

Art of persuasion-tools • Language – the language an advertiser, a politician, or a writer uses is critical to creating an effective argument. • On the next slide are some examples of effective word choices. • Take a minute to read through them. • Choose three that you think are especially effective & write them underneath your quick write.

  16. Art of persuasion-quick write2 minutes • If You Can Convince Mom and Dad, • YOU CAN CONVINCE ANYONE!!!! • Think of some things that you would like to persuade your parents and/or guardian to allow you to do that they do not want you to do. • Jot down as many things as you can think of

  17. persuasive topic sentences • How might you use language choices, and or the three appeals to create effective topic sentences for your persuasive essay? • Example 1: Critics of school uniforms claim that when required to wear uniforms, students lose their sense of individuality. • Example 2: Those unable to make the choice for themselves suffer the most.

  18. Persuasive topic sentences-4 minutes • Select one of your ideas from the quick write about what things you might try to persuade your parents to allow you to do. • Write 3 persuasive topic sentences for this topic (1 for each body paragraph).

  19. Persuasive topic sentences-ranking (3 minutes) • Now look at the topic sentences you have created. • Rank them from most effective (persuasive) to least effective.

  20. Modified Whip Around • Read aloud to the class the topic sentence that you ranked as #1.

Persuasive Essays • How are persuasive essays different from a traditional 5 paragraph essay? • A good persuasive essay always addresses or acknowledges the opposing argument. • Then you state why the opposing argument is not valid & your argument is better or more effective (defend or rebutt) the opposition.

Persuasive Essay-Counterargument • Example of counterargument & defense. • While it is true that television includes very violent and sexual content, it is also true that TV provides educational venues as well as entertainment. One cannot restrict access to a medium that has redeeming value simply because some are affected negatively and will use it to excess and in inappropriate ways.

Persuasive Essays-groups • You will use the topic you generated for the thing you would like to persuade your parents to allow you to do. • Get in groups of four. • Decide amongst the four of you which topic your group will create arguments for. • After you have selected a topic you will break into pairs. • One pair will create 3 reasons why your parents should allow you to do this. • One pair will create 3 reasons that your parents will say no.

  26. Persuasive essay-groups • Reconvene & share the 3 reasons & counterarguments that you came up with • On one sheet of paper for your group, write down the 3 reasons & the 3 counterarguments. • Make sure that you have used persuasive language and or the three appeals.

  27. D.O.L • For this topic, create 1 topic sentence using persuasive language and appeals. • Create one counterargument & defense. • Topic • Energy drinks should not be available for purchase by people under 18.
