“It’s a Wonderful Life” A requiem for a bygone era. What made this story of an alternative future so compelling in it’s day?. What makes it so endearing even now?. Does it make us feel nostalgic or hopeful?. Why is it easier to look backward rather than forward?.

What made this story of an alternative future so compelling in it’s day?
Jeremiah 33:14-164 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.15 “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line;he will do what is just and right in the land.
In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it[a] will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’
“The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah...”
There are no shepherds in this passage. No star in the east. No angels singing on a hillside.
The Temple is gone. Jerusalem is in ruin. Memories of David’s kingdom are in the past.
Humans meet despair when they cannot imagine God’s promised alternative future...
1. Leave The Past If you live in the past, you never leave it... you never learn from it.
The past should be a signpost of trust that helps us hopefully imagine what God is going to do in the future.
Righteousness is not an attitude or an absolute standard---it’s conduct in accord with God’s purposes--It is doing the good thing and the God thing.
3. Hope for A Hope-filled FutureYou won’t be able to fill the future with hope by sheer force of your own will.
You place yourself in a position so that you can be ready when God’s new reality breaks through.
