Role of Energy Efficiency in Germany Development of Prmary Energy Consumption in Germany Source: BMWi 2012
Political Framework Conditions in Germany to Support and Strengthens Energy Efficiency • Kyoto, Copenhagen, etc • EU ETS • EU Energy Strategy 2020 • Directive 2006/32/EC on energy end-use efficiency and energy services (ESD • National Energy Efficiency Action Plan • German Energy Concept • Eco Tax (Energy Tax) • Voluntary Commitments • Promotion Programs
Political Framework Conditions in Germany to Support and Strengthens Energy Efficiency National Energy Efficiency Policy regulative approach German Energy Concept:Energy Supply (up to 2050) Energy Efficiency as the key factor Overall Energy Efficiency Targets: Reduction of Prime Energy Consumption (baseline 2008): by 20% by 2020 by 50% by 2050 Special focus on EE in Industry
Political Framework Conditions in Germany to Support and Strengthens Energy Efficiency National Energy Efficiency Policy regulative approach Eco Tax (energy tax) • Regulatory instrument. • Increase price of energy costs • Exemptions possible for energy intense industry, provided: • Good energy management demonstrated (EN 16001, ISO 50001) • Investments in energy efficiency • To be considered with other EE promotion activities
Political Framework Conditions in Germany to Support and Strengthens Energy Efficiency National Energy Efficiency Policy regulative approach Voluntary Agreements • Successful instrument in several energy intensive sectors
Political Framework Conditions in Germany to Support and Strengthens Energy Efficiency A Current Perspective Conclusion> Combining Economic Growth and Climate Change • Germany’s national target: - 40 % GHG emissions by 2020 vs. 1990 (facilitated through reunification: breakdown of heavy industry, fuel switch, energy efficiency in former GDR; altogether ca. 10 %) • 2007 integrated energy and climate programme, 29 measures, estimated to achieve 32 to 35 % • Combining energy efficiency and renewable energy; nuclear phase-out; CCS not yet (except pilot plants) • Analysis: • 24 billion Euros/year of investment; • 29 billion Euros/year of annual savings in 2020; • Net employment growth 500,000 by 2020; 800,000 by 2030
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies Types of Cross-Sectional Technologies Lighting Compressed Air Refrigeration Technology Pumps Electrical Drives andEngines Process Automation HeatRecovery ProcessHeat
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Energy Saving Potential of Cross-Sectional Technologies • most companies could potentially reduce their consumption of electricity and associated costs for these cross-application technologies by 5 % to 50 % • the payback period is less than two years and the return on investment is more than 25 % > measures that improve energy efficiency are extremely appealing to companies for economic reasons • Exchanging single technologies doesn`t require the change of the production process
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Compressed Air Compressed air is used in the following areas: • Pneumatics • active air (compressed air as a means of transport) • process air (for example, drying processes) • vacuum technology • The electricity required to generate compressed air can account for 20 % to 80 % of the overall energy costs in a company
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Refrigeration Technology • in refrigeration technology, there is often great potential for reducing energy costs • this concerns the continuous operating costs of such systems, which may account for up to 80 % of the total costs associated with a refrigeration system • General approaches for improving efficiency: • improvedheatinsulation • reducedheatradiation • adjusted “busy” times and operating times • basicprocess design • optimised power, pressure and temperature levels • efficientcontroltechnology • detailed design and selection of individual components • use of thermal cooling machines, for example, with solar heat, district heating, industrial waste heat as well as waste heat from combined heat and power systems (CHPs)
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Pumps Energy saving • Pump systems presently account for a good 25 % of the industrial electricity consumed worldwide Percentage of electricity consumed among motor-driven systems within the EU • Large market share of Centrifugal and displacement pumps • on average, companies can reduce the electricity consumed by their pumps by approximately 30 % (accord. to a DENA study)
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Electrical Drives and Engines • consume 64 % of all electricity used in industry • The EN 60034-30:2009 standard defines worldwide efficiency classes of low-voltage three-phase asynchronous motors • Not primarily the motor determines the optimal efficiency; it is the way the speed is controlled • Lifecycle Costs > the costs associated with electricity consumption accounts for up to 96% Lifecycle costs of an electric motor: Fuel saving • investments in energy saving can often be amortised within just a few months Heat pump
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Process Heat • Process heat is the heat required for numerous technical processes and procedures in trade and industry • necessary for cooking, baking, sterilising, drying, smelting, forging, welding and producing steam • Increased energy efficiency is mostly achieved by optimizing the system technology • appropriatecontrolsystems • Optimizationofthecombustion/boilertechnology/ • Improvementofheatinsulation • combined heat and power (CHP) or combined cooling and power (CCP) • Heatrecovery
Energy Efficiency Solutions “Made in Germany” – The Role of Cross Sectional Technologies • Waste Heat Recovery Heat recovery measures result both in: • lower energy costs by reducing the use of primary energy, and • in lower investment costs for heat production plants Heat recovery can reduce: • the connection power for heat energy and cooling energy, • the level of energy consumption for heating and cooling, • investment costs and operating costs as well as pollutant emissions
