  7. GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION Geographical indication (GI) refers to goods - natural, agricultural or manufactured - that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that origin.

The current situation of GIP • We are about to loss 117 GI product. • The most valuable product we have lost: Noksikatha, Jamdani, Fojli etc. • Near about 500 or more families willloss their job, if we only loss Jamdani. • So we not only loss our tradition, but also we are imposed with numerous numbers of burden.

USE OF KATAN SHAREE • Sharee is mostly associated with the culture and tradition of Bangladeshi women. • Most of the women ware sharee occasionally or regularly. • Occasional users use sharee for Pohela Boisakh or Pohela Falgun or Valentines Day or Weeding Ceremoney. • Women mainly use katan sharee for weeding ceremony. • From higher class to lower class people use Katan Sharee.

  13. HISTORY OF KATAN SARI • Katan Sharee is mainly a type of Benarosi. The raw materials (mainly a kind of Silk) of Katan come from China. Some experts of Benaros came at Bangladesh and from 1947 they started to produce Katan Sharee. After 1971, it’s demand increased drastically and many experts join with them and they established Benarosi polli at Mirpur-10, Dhaka. • Though Benarosi is the basic of Katan Sharee, only Bangladesh produce Katan Sharee.

  16. What is GI Act? • A Geographical Indication is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location ( town, region, or country). The use of GI may act as a certification that the product possesses certain quality, is made according to traditional method or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin. • Geographical Indication are traditional products, produced by rural communities over generations that have gained a reputation on the markets for their specific products.

  17. What is GI Act? • “TRIPS” :Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Right-Were included, governments of all WTO member(155 Countries as of 10 May 2012) had agreed to set certain basic standards for the protection of GIs in all member countries.

  18. Why GI Act is Needed for Bangladesh? For sometimes now, we have seen that three items which are very dear to every Bangladeshi have been registered by India as its own products. They are the famous – • Jamdani sharee, • The exquisite Nakshi Kantha • Delicious Fazli mango.

  19. Why GI Act is Needed for Bangladesh? • We have to move fast in our effort to prevent some other country from listing our unique products and calling them their own. Any affirmative action by our government in such matters will therefore be welcome. • Coleridge had once said: "Silence does not always mark wisdom."We must heed his advice in this case.”

Why KATAN???? • There is a Huge risk that India may register it under their GI products. • Sharee is women’s traditional wear, But KatanSharee is the pride of this Tradition • Katan has these distinctive attributes • Difference in making • Workers culture • Combination of several cultural identity • Bangladeshi cultural blooming We can produce labor-intensive beautiful Bangladeshi product. Means: “Beautiful Bangladesh”

Remarks: • We grieve and feel responsible after the GI products registration of the three products by India (our righteous one’s). • But prevention is better than cure. • We ask the responsible persons and organization of Bangladesh to register Katan Sharee in our GI products before its too late. We hope that the government will register all the products that have been presenting here as GI products.
