Foundation Degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Practical Placement-Britannia Aircraft Preservation Trust, Speke Airport, Liverpool
The Aim To provide ‘real life’ practical hands on experience of maintenance of a whole aircraft To assist with a longstanding, established project To bring back a bit of ‘history’ in re-developing a 1930s airport to its former glory
The Location Speke Airport , Liverpool
Aims of the Britannia Aircraft Preservation Trust Preservation & exhibition of Britannia Aircraft Raise funds for restoration work Co-ordinate volunteer work programmes
Technical skills developed Skin repair Stringer repair Treating interior sections Getting aircraft up on to its undercarriage
So how does this all help motivate students? Students can put into perspective their college work with the sector they will be employed in There is an increased interest in getting involved with community type work Helps build students confidence as not such a worry that they will damage this aircraft No commercial pressures
….and the future? There is at least 5 years more work left on the aircraft –good for future student cohorts Look for further involvement with preservation societies to a) add to work with operational airlines b) provide ‘ready’ experience
