  14. Our Mission Statement: The SU Advice Centre offers a free, independent and impartial service on all the main issues affecting students at MMU. We aim to ensure your time at university is not lessened through a lack of support or knowledge of your rights.

  15. We like to think of ourselves as…. a Citizens Advice Bureau for MMU students!

  16. We advise on almost any issue. The areas we specialise in are; Student Finance Tuition Fees, Maintenance Loans/Grants, MMU Bursaries Specialist grants (Childcare Grant, Disabled Students Allowance, Parents Learning Allowance) Access to Learning Fund (commonly known as MMU’s hardship Fund)

  17. Personal Finance • Welfare and disability benefits; including tax credits, housing benefit • Debt (rent/mortgage, credit cards, benefit overpayments) • Council Tax liability

  18. Academic Issues Disciplinary and plagiarism procedures, including representation at meetings Exceptional Factors applications Complaints and appeals Housing Contract checking Tenants’ rights, eviction, disrepair Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme

  19. We also work closely with the University Student Services and frequently refer students to Counselling, Careers, Learner Development Service and Faculty Student Support Officer’s

  20. How do we operate? • We offer advice sessions at the SU on Oxford Road, the SU at Crewe, Didsbury campus, Hollings campus and Gaskell campus • Appointments • Drop-in service • Telephone service • Email service • Booklets • Website with FAQ’s • Home visits if required

  21. Social Policy The SU Advice Centre is here to represent individuals, however, we can help the whole student body at MMU through social policy work. We keep social policy records of any cases which show policy changes might need to be made at MMU. We then pass on this information to our Student Voice Manager to be used in campaigns.

  26. What do we do? Comprehensive advice, assessment and support service for disabled students including the production of Personal Learning Plans Group dyslexia screenings & onward referral to Educational Psychologist Advisory support for staff on student-related disability issues Staff development and training

  27. What constitutes disability? A physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day to day activities. Adjustments for students with temporary injuries are at the discretion of their academic department not Learner Development.

  30. MMU Institutional Support Procedure Student completes disclosure and data protection form No Student to bring in evidence Has the student got evidence of their disability? Yes Personal Learning Plan sent to Student Life Office / Exams Officer / Library & copy to student Student to see adviser to complete Personal Learning Plan

  31. Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) Student completes DSA1 form during PLP appointment Report sent to Funding body Receives Eligibility Letter *SFE delays Await approval Attend Assessment of Needs interview Order equipment and arrange support workers Assessor writes up report

Support from DSA Specialist Equipment: Dictaphones, Computers loaded with specialist software etc.Non-Medical Helpers: Note Taker, Study Coach, British Sign Language Interpreter etc.General Allowances: Allowances for non-core books, photocopying and Printer Cartridges etc.Travel: Reimbursing additional disability-related travel costs.

Other Support Roles Faculty Student Support Officers: provide support for all students including study skills Counselling Service: Individual & group counselling plus workshops & courses including relaxation & stress management Departmental Disability Coordinators: An academic member of staff who coordinates the support for disabled students within their departmentFaculty Disability Contacts: Coordinates the administration of the personal learning plan process and examination requirements
