  20. What was at stake? • The city of Rome and the city of Cassino. • In the beginning the Germans were holding the Rapido, Liri, and Garigliano valleys and surrounding peaks. But they didn’t have the historic abbey of Monte Cassino. On February 15, the abbey was destroyed by American bombers and after German poured into the ruins to defend it. From January 17- May 18 the abbey was assaulted 4 more times by allied troops for a loss of 54,000 allied and 20,000 German soldiers.
