Flour Baby Unit Portfolio Presentation Chad Bikle
Unit Summary Over the course of the next month, students will be paired up in order to simulate family life with a child. The students will be given one bag of flour between the two of them and asked to take care of the flour bag to the best of their abilities. Responsibilities will include dressing the bag, feeding the bag, making sure the bag gets proper sleep and proper nourishment. Every action taken towards the bag will be recorded in a daily log which will be handed in at the end of the unit.
Curriculum-Framing Questions Essential Question Can you take care of a baby with a spouse? Unit Questions Why is this unit important in regards to today’s society? What are ideal home conditions for a newborn? Content Questions What does a baby need to survive? What are the downsides of taking care of newborns? Is it harder or easier to raise a newborn with a spouse? Explain this.
Flour Baby This project will help my students develop 21st century skills by: • Collaborating with peers • Solving financial situations with today’s prices • Analyzing data to see how appropriate treatment of newborns effects their daily lives • Evaluating and re-evaluating daily decisions
Gauging Student Needs Purpose of the Assessment To gather information about what students know about raising newborns and what they wonder about the process. What I want to learn from my students? I want to know what they already know about raising newborns and how well they can adapt to the situation. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to come up with cost saving ways to raise their child with the incomes they are given by me. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? This assessment will constantly be revisited throughout the year as it ties in with our sex education unit along with nutrition and family life units. What feedback or additional ideas I’d like? I’d like feedback from the students after the unit to see how I could make certain aspects of the unit more challenging or easier to attain if too challenging.
My Goals for the Course • Find ways to keep students interested in health and nutrition. • Learn more about student views and aspects and how society has influenced their opinions. • Receive valuable feedback in which I can alter the unit to make better for next year.
Goals for My Students • Have students realize the importance of safe sex by letting them experience child raising. • Have students learn valuable nutrition and sleeping habits for themselves and their future children. • Have them learn how to appropriately cooperate with a partner (spouse).
Request for Feedback • Places I could find a classroom in a difference climate for my students to work with. • Ideas for helping students take more responsibility for their own learning.
